Wilderness First Aid Training

A large part of First Aid training can be applied to a wide spread of circumstances, but there are also particular situations where specialist information is necessary. This is quite straightforward to understand, because a bump or a scrape can happen under any circumstances, but phenol poisoning would probably only occur in an industrial accident.

There is not much purpose in learning how to help victims of certain accidents if you are highly unlikely to ever be able to apply that knowledge. However, you ought to take advantage of each free or subsidized specialist course that you are offered at work. The same can be said for any pastime that you have, although you will probably have to stump up for the course yourself.

In this situation, I am thinking about swimmers, yachters, campers, hikers and people involved in sports or pastimes of that nature. After all, there is less point in knowing how to save a drowning person if your hobby is walking or mountaineering. Knowing First Aid pointers in the wilderness is very useful, but they are more likely to include, stroke, heart attack, broken bones and unconsciousness.

You are in essence on your own when you are in the outback or on a mountainside. If you are with a partner, all well and good, you are safer, but there is also two times the chance of an accident. However, there are more common reasons for concern than actual physical accidents.

Some of the far more common accidents that occur while you are wandering in some wilderness or other are exhaustion, dehydration and insect bites. If you are hiking in the winter or above the snow line, then there is also frostbite and hypothermia to consider.

In general, there are also snake bites and bites from large creatures to consider. Fractured bones due to a fall are fairly common, so if you are planning a hike into the wilderness, you really do have to be ready, because, if your phone is receiving a signal and the battery is charged, it could still take hours for help to come to you.

If you have a penchant for wandering in the wilderness, the first thing to do is not go alone. Make certain that you go with someone who has more experience than yourself until you can honestly say that you are competent to lead someone else into a very dangerous area where help is hours away by helicopter.

If you have studied how to go into the wilderness by partnering someone else, you ought to be OK. Another way of learning is to join the Scouts. Learning in this way will give you plenty of time to pick up pointers on how to handle exceptional conditions.

Do not make believe that you are able to lead someone else if you do not have the skill. Being stuck tens of miles from anywhere in the dark with a broken leg and no concept what to do is not going to impress anyone.

The Link Between Stress And Heart Disease

Stress and heart disease are infamous for being closely linked. How many times have you seen someone suffer a stressful moment and die in films? This is not a joke – it one of the few times that films are revealing the truth.

Naturally, there are other reasons of heart disease too: obesity and smoking to name but two, but stress can be the final nail in your coffin if you do not look after yourself.

There are several things you can do to reduce the danger of stress and heart disease. These include taking more exercise, learning how to relax and not smoking.

Learn how to reduce your stress by other means than smoking and drinking and maybe you will not fall victim to stress and heart disease.

Financial stress is one the most common factors of stress and is also one of the most problematic to treat. The reason why financial stress is a problem to beat is that if you really care about your financial situation, you are probably already doing everything that you can.

If you are already doing all you can to alleviate your financial situation and you are still suffering financial stress, then you will feel ensnared.

Office stress can build up very easily, but the causes are wide-ranging. Office stress can start because you are anxious about you job or because you think that you are an outcast. Office stress can also rear its ugly head because your boss is over-demanding or because you know that your job is beyond you.

There are methods of combatting office stress, but it is you who has to start the ball rolling.

A stress headache is a very real occurrence. In fact, it is thought that the majority of headaches are stress related. it is not for nothing, that |when individuals feel that they are losing it, that their hands go to their head.

Pain can be a result and this is probably a stress headache. Frequently a stress headache will begin with tension in the neck and shoulders and will mutate into pain in the temples, behind the eyes – this is a true stress headache.

The indications of stress take numerous forms and sometimes the reason for the stress dictates the indications of stress that the sufferer will experience. For instance. If the cause of the stress was an attack, then some of the indications of stress might be flashbacks and nightmares.

However, if the cause of your stress is job related, symptoms of stress might be psychosomatic illnesses so you can get a day off or you might suffer a non-existent feeling of rejection by your colleagues.

First Aid Training And Kits For Kids

Children frequently copy what they see. They are quick learners and they are programmed to be exactly that. Once they can walk and talk they have roughly ten years to learn as much as possible before being given a lot of freedom to walk the world alone. This differs from country to country and from century to century, but the principle is the same.

Although most children are quite heavily supervised during these ten years, a great deal of children do spend a bit of time alone or just in the company of just other children. This means that it is a great concept to teach children some emergency measures. In the early days, First Aid training for kids could be as simple as teaching them to phone the emergency number if they see or get into trouble.

Thirty years ago when I was living in the Netherlands, I witnessed an attempted suicide by overdose. My friend was giving CPR and he asked me to go to the phone booth to call the ambulance. I went but when I got there, 999 (the UK emergency number did not work). I looked about in the phone booth but could not see an emergency number although my Dutch was very good. I had to go outside and stop a passer-by to ask. I wasted minutes and he passed away.

Before a child goes off to school at five or six, children ought to know the fundamentals like: the emergency number, not to talk to strangers, not to get into anyone’s car, that blood is dangerous and has to be treated and that bones break, so to take care when running about. Anything else would be a bonus.

You could also make a First Aid kit with your child. You could sit down, discuss the contents of a useful, personal First Aid kit and then take your child to a chemist’s to buy the bits and pieces. When back home, you could talk about how to use the constituents, pack them into a box and put that in the child’s school bag.

Get into the routine of going through the contents of the kit with your child to replenish used and out-of-date items. This is also helpful for reinforcing what the things are used for.

A First Aid kit for a school beginner might include soap, disposable gloves, plasters, iodine, calamine lotion, sunblock, a few small coins for the telephone and a card with your address and phone number on it..

Afterwards, as the years go by, you could add paracetamol, bandages, scissors, tweezers, matches and anything else you think is crucial.

You could lengthen the list of telephone numbers to include a trusted neighbour or grandparent in case you are engaged and maybe the head teacher at school as well. You could hold a short quiz from time to time in the guise of a game to make certain that your child knows what everything is for and who to phone.

Once your child gets to eight or nine, enroll him or her into the scouts, guides or a paramedical organization like the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade to continue the First Aid training for kids.

Why You Should Try All Natural Skin Care Products

You have almost certainly been using skin care products for a while already, but there are so many products on the market, aren’t there? It is so hard to make your mind up which is the best. I hope that I can give you a few pointers in the rest of this article.

Daily environmental pollution and the sun’s UV rays amplify the body’s production of free radicals. Your body already produces free radicals on a daily basis as a side-product of normal metabolism. However, free radicals can result in mutations in cells including skin cells. This can result in signs of premature senility such as cataracts or ‘old skin’ like wrinkles or even cancer. Therefore, any holistic health regimen must include antioxidants, which eradicate free radicals. Sun block is a front line defense too.

Many health and skin care routines promote using sunblock if you go outside, but there is a chance that you will run short of vitamin D by doing that. A shortage of vitamin D can lead to osteoporosis, to which older women are particularly prone. If you are worried about this, then you should take vitamin supplements.

Your skin is your largest organ and so you should not be surprised to read that your skin often reflects issues that your internal organs may have. Therefore, if you want good looking skin, you have to take care of your whole body. This basically means, hygiene, diet and exercise. Concentrating on eradicating free radicals is a good tactic too.

Honey is an important component of many skin care products. This is because honey is a natural product and it is the only foodstuff that will not go off. No matter how long you leave it. Look for products involving honey, or just use raw, natural honey yourself!

Honey does not contain water, so it is not a moisturizer, but it is very effective at killing bacteria, including the bacteria that can cause dermatitis.

Olive oil is an excellent moisturizer for the skin and the hair. Try it on hard dry skin on your heels, elbows and knees as well. It is also very effective as a bath oil. Try putting a few drops in your bath next time

Romans used olive oil as a cleanser and you can use it as an exfoliant as well. Mix it with sand or brown sugar and rub it on your skin before bathing. There are many ways that you can improve the condition of your skin without going to to the pharmacy, the problem is that most people have forgotten what their grandparents knew. So, instead of reaching for you wallet or purse, do a little research first and possibly you will find that the answer to your skin problems lies in your kitchen cabinets.

Places Where People Live Longer

Most individuals do not relish death. They would like to live a long life and endeavour to stay eternally young. The peoples of each country spend billions each year on health care and beauty products.

Some individuals think that the length of time you live is written in fate and there is nothing that you can do to change it, others think that we only have a certain number of heart beats, but most individuals believe that genetics, diet and lifestyle are the major influences.

However, there may be another feature worth looking into: your place of residence. There are a couple of places around the world where individuals appear to live longer, on average, than is normal for their country or globally.

Take the city of Okinawa in southern Japan. Okinawa has over a million inhabitants, 900 of whom are over 100 years of age. Japan has an aging populace in general, but nowhere there matches Okinawa for longevity and the percentage of centenarians is between four and five times greater than in the UK or the USA.

Not only do Okinawans live longer, but they also tend to stay healthy until their dying days, which is everyone’s dream. Diet is considered to be the foremost reason why Okinawans live such long, healthy lives. They consume a great deal of fish, tofu, soya and seaweed and swill it down with plenty of tea.

This makes their diet low in saturated fats and pretty low in salt. However, it is also a widely-held belief in Okinawa that one should only consume until one is 80% full not 100% This may put less strain on the digestive system, but no one is quite certain yet if this has a bearing on living a longer, healthy life.

Then there is Loma Linda in California, the USA. The citizens of Loma Linda live an average of five to ten years longer than the residents of near-by towns. The town is predominantly Seventh Day Adventist, which preaches vegetarianism, no smoking and no alcohol. Some will point to these reasons as the reasons for living longer.

However, this does not account for why nearly everybody, even the smoking, alcohol-drinking, meat-eating inhabitants, lives longer. Others put the longevity down to religious belief, but researchers are mystified. Maybe going to church and relying on God relieves believers of some of the stress of daily life and stress is famous to be a cause of major diseases.

Another strange place is Owoda on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. It is only a village of less than 2,000 residents but it has far more than the average number of 100 year olds than elsewhere. What is even stranger is that there are as many old men as old women which is not the standard anywhere else in the world.

The well-known Mediterranean diet and the pleasant climate are thought to be reasons at play here, but it might also have something to do with their genes. The residents were practically isolated for hundreds of years and marriage among relatives was not uncommon. Usually this is not recommended because it can cause abnormalities. It looks like the abnormality that inter-marriage caused for the Owodans is longevity.

First Aid For Camping

Accidents occur even on the most well planned camping vacations. You have to not only plan to avoid injuries, but you also have to plan on how to deal with them if and when they occur while camping. The important thing is to remember to stay calm. The worse thing you can do is panic.

You need to keep a clear head and just let your first aid training kick in. If you don’t have any first aid education then you should go to some classes before going camping. If you are not composed then you may not administer the correct treatment and this could just make it more serious.

Three common ailments that befall campers are dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. To most individuals these all seem like the same ailments, and they are, but they each have to be treated in a different way. Confusing which treatment goes with which will not only halt healing, but it could also do damage. The principal common problem when camping is lack of fluids. The best thing to do is just to keep yourself well hydrated with water.

You may drink nothing but lemonade and coffee at home, but if you try that when camping you will quickly find yourself in a hospital room for dehydration. There are several symptoms of dehydration besides the obvious thirst. Excessive sweating, rapid breathing, clammy skin, and loss of skin elasticity are all signs of dehydration. Children may also have sunken eyes when dehydrated.

If someone becomes dehydrated while you’re camping then you want to have them rest in the shade and drink plenty of cold water. You’ll also want them to remove any superfluous clothing. Heat exhaustion is another common problem while camping. This is caused by not only too much heat, but can also be caused by too much humidity.

A person suffering from heat exhaustion will have pale, clammy skin, rapid breathing, excessive sweating, thirst and nausea, headache, and exhaustion. Again you’ll want the individual to take a rest from camping and completely rest with their feet elevated. Cool water and a shady place are a necessity.

You’ll even need to sponge the person with water. The third common camping ailment is heat stroke. Heat stroke is caused by your body not regulating body temperature correctly, causing your body to overheat. Symptoms are flushed, dry skin, a lack of sweat, rapid and weak pulse, irrational behavior, staggering, headache, and nausea.

If not diagnosed early and treated this can also lead to a collapse, a seizure, a coma, and even death. If someone develops heat exhaustion while camping you need to get help immediately and get an ambulance. Have them rest in the shade with their head elevated.

Use iced or cold water to cool them down and if they are aware have them drink. These three problems are common when camping and should be watched for and treated right away.

First aid knowledge is essential when camping. Remember that water always helps, so have plenty of it with you at all times. If anything does happen on your camping trip stay calm and remember what you have learned.

If he’s red raise his head, if he’s pale raise his tail, is a good rhyme to help you remember what to do if anything happens while you’re camping. Keep cool and hydrated and you should be able to avoid problems like these on your camping expedition.

Financial Stress

There are several forms of financial stress, because it can stem from your business activities, from your personal situation or your family life. However, basically they all from an inability to pay bills. However, financial stress does not always result from a deficiency of money it can also come from having handled money badly. If you are suffering from financial stress, then maybe we have a couple of pointers that can help.

The first step is to get your paperwork and bill-writing kit organized. This can become as complicated or as simple as you like. You could have an envelope rack hanging somewhere prominently like in the kitchen. (An envelope rack is like what they display newspapers in at a newsagents).

Get yourself a container and put in it pens, paper, your cheque book, envelopes, a calculator and stamps. Choose a day every week when you will deal with bills, say a Sunday evening.

Every time a bill comes in, you ought to open it and put it in the letter rack. If it does not need your immediate attention, which can happen, over the first month, mark on the outside of the envelope the date you have to post the cheque, say seven days before the due date. Mark your bill-paying days on your calendar.

Create a list of the bills you have paid and strive to keep them grouped together. For example, all your monthly electricity bills on one page, gas on another, mortgage etc. In this manner you will be able to predict what your bill will be next time and the date it will arrive. This will allow you to maintain a basic financial plan. Predictability takes some of the stress out of finances, thereby reducing your financial stress.

If some bills are a little random, coming in at different times of the month, try writing to the company and asking them if they can consolidate the bills into one monthly bill that will arrive in the week of your choice, normally the first or the fourth week of the month.

In the beginning, you may have to write a couple of letters to explain that you have taken your finances in hand but that it might take a few months before you are on top of them. This should ward off any litigation if you have let items slide too far already.

You ought to find that the degree of your financial stress should gradually reduce as you become used to your new financial system and as you see that this system works. One last tip is to pay some bills every time you are paid yourself.

It is worth a couple of months of financial hardship or overtime to reduce your financial stress and get on top of your finances again. Financial stress, like all kinds of stress, is a killer – don’t let it get to you as well.

Traditional Medications

As you all know, the way that it works with medicine is: you get sick, you go to the GP, he/she gives you a prescription, you buy that, take it and hopefully undergo a full recovery. In a way, it has always been like that. People went to the most skilled person in the village for advice on how to cure an ailment, a couple of herbs were prescribed and a donation received.

The only real difference in the procedure nowadays is that then, there was a far higher general awareness of the power of herbs. These days, in the Developed World at least, the medical profession and the pharmaceuticals have managed to wean us off herbs by one means or another – usually fear.

The fact is that most drugs are made from herbs or plants or from synthesized chemicals found in herbs and plants. In a way, all we have done is substituted purchasing for picking.

OK, I know that it is more complicated than that. Drugs are often combinations that work well together and being told to take one tablet a day saves you having to worry about overdosing, but there are still often side-effects. Just read the leaflet inside the box of your next box of pills.

Mine says: concern, fainting, erectile dysfunction, low blood pressure, diarrheoa and heart failure. Charming, isn’t it? They are pills for high blood pressure (beta-blockers). I live in a small village in northern Thailand, where high blood pressure is not a problem, but I know one old lady who has it and high cholesterol and her nurse showed her which tree to choose leaves from to make a tea. She does not take tablets, but I still do.

There is also a woman who started coming into our garden four months ago to select purple flowers off a form of wisteria that we grow (dork anchan). ‘It is for my son’s very bad cough’, she said. Asthma, I think she was trying to say.

Anyway, she plucks a handful a week and her son is fine. I had a cough at Christmas and tried it myself. I drank two cups of tea before going to bed and I drank the cold dregs in the morning, but my cough had already vanished.

The hottest time of the year here is March – May, after which it is still hot but the monsoons come and cool it down. Last year, for the first time in my life I suffered from prickly heat in the hot snap. This year it began again, but someone suggested Aloe Vera.

‘Obviously’, said my wife and went into the garden to cut some. She cut two small ‘leaves’ and I spent three days dabbing the sap onto the affected parts. It had almost gone on the second day, but it disappeared on the third day and has not come back despite the fact that it has become hotter since then.

A great deal of people are taking another look at traditional treatments and I am going to be one of them. The difficulty in our village is that my Thai is not good, only my wife speaks some English and individuals are afraid to talk about the old methods in case I think that they are backward.

The Importance Of First Aid At Work

If you own a business, you are probably obliged by law to provide some kind of First Aid to your workforce. There might well be laws governing what degree of service you have to provide, but if there are not, this piece will endeavour to help you work out a sensible approach to the question. However, whichever way you look at it, the provision of First Aid in the workshop is very important.

There are in essence four reasons involved in the equation: the administerer of the First Aid, the First Aid kit, the First Aid room and the First Aid apparatus. The causes influencing the above components are: the type of industry you are in, the number of workers, the sort of shifts and your distance from the closest hospital.

The shift factor is vital because you will need to provide a health care worker (at least one) for every shift. If there are employees from many subcontractors on site (such as on a building site) the main contractor ought to provide health care for all the workers on site and make a charge to the proprietors of the subcontractors’ firms.

Any agreements between workers and employers and main and sub-contractors should be put in on paper and signed by all parties concerned. These agreements should then by photocopied and distributed to everyone concerned.

The employer should supply a notice in various prominent locations throughout the site or factory giving details of where the closest trained First Aider is and his or her name. The trained individual should be healthy, responsible, normally at work and be ready to leave his or her workstation immediately when required to help.

The First Aiders should receive training from a recognized body and a certificate of competence should be given. If possible, the training should be given in your own workshop so that the trainers can observe any local hardships.

The First Aider ought to get trained in writing records. For example, although the First aider’s obligation ceases when the paramedics arrive, the supplier of First Aid should make and be able to furnish a record of any therapy given before their arrival.

The First Aid box should be maintained regularly. Things that have passed their sell-by-date should be disposed of and replaced and someone has to be given the responsibility for doing this and signing a register to declare that the inspection has taken place. There should be a First Aid box within a few minutes walk of perilous locations like machinery

The kits should contain all standard things such as antiseptic, plasters, bandages, safety pins, scissors, iodine et cetera, but they should also contain remedies specific to your industry, if there are any. It is also a good idea to put a First Aid data sheet in the box just in case it is not the trained First Aider who has to supply the help.

Stress Headaches And How To Treat Them

We all have headaches from time to time, but do you know why you have those headaches? If you just get a headache from time to time, once every couple of of weeks or so, it is not much of a problem, but if you fear your next headache, then you almost certainly do have a problem.

Tension headaches are the most common and tension can be related to stress, but there are also purely stress-related headaches. This sort of headache can also be driven away by a tablet or two from the medicine cabinet, but it is better to get rid of the reason for the headache. Attack the reason not the symptom. The remainder of this piece is about what to do with the various kinds of stress headaches.

Basically, a stress headache happens once the obstacles that are presented to you overwhelm your ability to deal with them. Some people get on well with stress others deal with stress less well. Some individuals even thrive on it and others have learned how to de-stress quickly.

When a person comes across stressful situations, a little bit of our mental defence against stress is eroded. This is fine and is standard practice, but then as other stresses happen there is less and less defence left to carry on. Trying to cope when you are starting to feel weaker and weaker will frequently bring on a stress headache.

Another reason why a stress headache is the most common kind of headache, is because other forms of headache can bring on a stress headache too. The good news is that almost all variations of headaches can be prevented or cured and a stress headache falls into this class.

There are, obviously pharmaceutical medicines to treat headaches and there are natural, home remedies as well but there are also non-medicinal methods of treating a stress headache. These other ways include: cognitive therapy, behavioural therapy and physical therapy.

These methods can be studied from books, night school groups, the local library, the Net or by arrangement with your clinic or medical doctor. It is well-worth learning how to use these techniques because taking drugs or treatments can lead to headaches as well.

Cognitive Therapy: seeks to ‘redirect’ stress headaches. In this method, the patient is taught to recognize what begins the stress symptoms and what the onset of a stress headache feels like. Then they are taught how to change their response to these conditions.

Behavioural Therapy: is a way of changing your life style to prevent the incidence of a stress headache. For example, numerous people reach for comfort foodstuffs or alcohol once they become stressed, but it may be better for you to do something else, |when you feel a stress headache coming on.

Physical Therapy: tries using bio-feedback responses, so that when a stress headache begins, the sufferer tries using relaxation techniques (perhaps yoga) in order to reduce their stress and possibly prevent the stress headache from occurring. Meditation, deep breathing and prayer are some of the other techniques that can be tried.
