The History Of The Common Tennis Ball

A tennis ball is very distinctive and are used by millions of children and adults all over the world for playing tennis, obviously, but many, many other less formal games too. They are not only the correct size for tennis, presumably anyway at 2.7 inches or 6.7 centimetres in diameter, but they also fit neatly into a hand or a dog’s mouth. Consequently people use them for playing catch, for various games of softball like rounders and for throwing for the dog to retrieve.

When I was a youngster, all tennis balls were white, but now you would be very hard pushed indeed to find a white one if, if indeed it is at all possible. Nowadays, all tennis balls are day-glow colours like yellow, green and orange. Presumably this modification was made for the sake of visibility on the TV screen.

The word ‘tennis’ comes from the French – ‘Tenez’ (pronounced ‘teney’), which meant ‘Take up Position’ or just ‘Start’. The origins of tennis were probably more than a thousand years ago, when it was played by monks. The racquet or racket was the palm of the hand and the ball was wooden.

No-one is really sure whether the next innovation was to wear leather mitts or to modify the ball to leather, but whichever it was, there was clearly a move to make the game less painful. When the ball changed from being wooden, it was manufactured of animal skin, most often leather, sewn up with sinews and stuffed with anything that came to hand, such as straw, wool and hair – animal and human.

The thing is that these early wooden and leather balls did not bounce, so the game was very different back then. Eventually, the monks began using ‘racquets’, but they looked more like bats than modern day tennis racquets.

In Disraeli’s book, “Sybil” (1845), the plot reveals how Lord Eugene De Vere was to travel to Hampton Court to play tennis, so the game was a familiar sport then, but it took until the late Nineteen Century for the game that we know today to become formalized by a set of rules. In 1874, Major Walter Wingfield was granted the patent for the rules and equipment of ‘lawn tennis’ and not much has altered since.

The next year tennis courts were set up in the USA and then the game of tennis spread like wildfire. Wingfield laid down the rules of the game and the sort of apparatus to be used. The game has not changed much since then in essence, but it has changed a lot nevertheless. The outline of the court is different now and science has been applied to the equipment to improve it.

The original ball in the late Nineteenth Century was manufactured of solid rubber and so would have been quite weighty, but at least it did bounce which instantly made the game more interesting and more lively. A bouncing ball made tennis into a more interesting game to play and a more interesting game to watch. The rubber ball allowed tennis to be a spectator sport that crowds would pay to watch.

Contemporary tennis balls have a rubberized skin, which is about eighty percent rubber, filled with air and covered by a layer of ‘hairy’ felt. The felt is important because it allows the surface of the ball more grip and can regularize the bounce as well. It also gives the ball a more predictable flight path even in the presence of wind.

The last aspect of modern tennis balls is the air inside. This can either be pressurized or non-pressurized. Pressurized balls give a better bounce whilst new, but they lose pressure with time and so are less reliable, whereas non-pressurized balls actually improve slightly with use, which is considered a benefit.

The French Open

It is pretty unimaginable that people will not know of the French Open tennis championship, because it is a competition which is an annual topic of conversation. In French the name of the competition is ‘Les Internationaux de France de Roland Garros’ or ‘Tournoi de Roland Garros’. This tournament, which lasts for about a fortnight is held in Paris at the Roland Garros Stadium, from which it got its name.

It is one of the most advertised and broadcast sports events throughout the entire world and lots of VIPs go to it. The attendees are fanatics who wait with baited breath on every stroke, especially when there is a tight struggle between two players, doing their best to win. Even TV viewers actually get a feeling of being there live.

The French Open tennis championship is the second on the annual schedule of the Grand Slam tournaments and its history goes back to the year of 1891 when it became an international competition. At that time it was named the ‘International Championship of Tennis of France’ or ‘Championat de France International de Tennis’ in French.

First of all, only players that were registered or licensed in France were allowed to join in this competition, but things took a different turn in 1925, when the French open tennis tournament finally was accessible to international players. Until 1912, the court the players used was made of crushed red brick dust. Actually the crushed brick was formed into a sort of red clay that was spread over the ground, which, until then, would have been a green lawn.

The popularity of the French Open tennis tournament held at Roland Garros dates back to a competition between the Philadelphia Four (Rene Lacoste, Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet and Jacques Brugnon) who won the Davis Cup in 1927. It triggered the desire in the French to defend their cup in future competitions. This new tournament designed to bring back home the cup was held on a stadium named after the World War I pilot Roland Garros and since then the name has stuck.

The word ‘open’ became has been used since 1968, when the tournament was open to both amateurs and professionals alike who wanted to test their skills at tennis. Since then the French Open tennis tournament has also brought some novelties in terms of prizes.

Beside the usual winners’ prizes, they also award a ‘Prix Orange’ for the most correct and press friendly player, a ‘Prix Citron’ for the player with the strongest personality and a ‘Prix Burgeon’ for the one that turns out to be the revelation of the tennis year.

Tennis Attire

If you already take part in tennis, then I take for granted that you already know what tennis players dress in, so this article is aimed at those individuals who want to procure tennis apparel for a dear one for a special occasion. After all, it is not as easy as it appears to obtain sports outfits for the player of a sport you understand nothing about.

There is a certain image we are inclined to relate with a tennis player: white Polo shirt with shorts or skirt and matching shoes. They are trendy and elegant, comfortable and classic at the same time. Items of tennis kit often signify a great deal to people who are not just sports fans. If the person you are shopping for is a tennis fan, tennis attire becomes a fantastic gift that could also be quite reasonably priced in spite of the rumors that it costs a fortune.

In case tennis kit is something unknown to you, Google it over the Internet and you will be surprised to see how much information there is available. Very many forums will obliquely inform you about prices and discounts going on at an assortment of retail shops and online merchants.

They will also provide you with information as to which marques are considered the best, which are considered the least hard-wearing and reliable, which are affordable and which more than usually dear .

What many tennis clothes users advise is that you buy the sort of top or shirt that would make you feel most comfortable and that will permit the very wide angled movements that are specific to the performance of this sport. For instance, the shorter the sleeves of your tennis clothing, the freer the movement during the game. Some buy tennis kit also according to the season in which they mean to play. Still others go for the materials that can be worn in both warm and cold seasons.

They firmly believe that the tennis kit ought to keep them both warm and cool at the same time. As far as the t-shirts for men are concerned, you must know that most players speak of Polo shirts in very high terms, as the collar offers you some neck protection from the sun’s rays.

Advice about tennis clothes like that above are to be had on very many web sites. If you are not quite sure what to go for when purchasing your friend a gift, then you can always inveigle him or her to have a discussion about his or her favourite sport. Using a little guile, you will surely be able to direct the conversation to a connected topic that interests you, i.e. tennis clothes. Making it all look like idle conversation will not make him or her guess what you have in mind for the special occasion.

Basic Tennis Psychology (Part 1)

Tennis psychology is only understanding the workings of your opponent’s mind, and assessing the effect of your own game on his/her head and also understanding the psychological effects resulting from the different external causes on your own mind.

However, it is also true that you no one can be a successful psychologist of others without first understanding his own psychology. Therefore, you must study the effect on yourself of the same thing occurring under various circumstances. This is because people react differently in different moods and under different circumstances.

You have to understand the effect on your game of the ensuing irritation, pleasure, bewilderment, or whatever other form your reaction takes. Does it improve your efficiency? If so, go for it, but never give it to your opponent. Does it rob you of concentration? If so, either remove the cause, but if that isn’t possible, try to ignore it.

Once you have correctly judged your own reaction to circumstances, study your opponents in order to decide their temperaments. Similar temperaments react similarly, and you can judge men of your own type by yourself. Other temperaments you must try to liken with those whose reactions you already know.

Someone who can control his/her own mental processes stands an excellent chance of reading those of another for the mind works along certain lines of thought and can be examined. One can only control one’s own mental processes after carefully examining them.

A steady, phlegmatic baseline player is seldom a keen thinker. If he were he would not stay on the baseline. The physical appearance of a player is often a fairly clear indicator of his/her kind of mind. The stolid, easy-going player, who usually advocates the baseline game, does so because he hates to stir up his/her slow mind to think out a safe strategy of getting to the net.

However, then there is the other kind of baseline player, who would rather remain at the rear of the court while supervising an attack intending to break up your game. He is a very dangerous player and a deep, quick thinking antagonist. He gets his/her results by mixing up his/her length and direction and worrying you with the variance of his/her game. This player is a very good psychologist.

The first sort of tennis player mentioned above just hits the ball without much thought about what he is really up to, while the latter always has a solid, thought-out strategy and adheres to it.

How To Choose Golf Shoes

Your swing may change with time, your accuracy and distance will improve with practice and strength, and you will become deadly accurate with a putter in time, but you will always do these things while standing on your own two feet and they can get tired.

So, your feet need to be comfortable! Have you ever got a blister while walking or running? It’s all you can think about and it ruins the experience of what you are doing. Don’t let uncomfortable shoes ruin your game of golf.

This is one time when you shouldn’t let your natural tendency to save money make the wrong decision for you. You will be wearing these shoes many times over a long period of time and they should be thought of as a good investment in your game of golf.

Comfort, not cost, should be your biggest concern when you are buying shoes. Your foot should not move at all at the heel when you walk, yet your toes shouldn’t feel constrained. Have your shoes fitted professionally and walk around in them before you actually buy them.

Serious golf shoes should also be waterproof, so that your feet remain dry in damp conditions. Good quality socks are just as important too, as they will draw perspiration away from you feet, keeping your feet dry and comfortable.

All golf courses forbid the use of metal spikes on golf shoes in an effort to protect their vulnerable greens. Purchase shoes that allow you to change the rubber spikes easily, and while you’re doing that, purchase a few extra spikes as you never know when you may lose one. You should also replace the spikes when they become worn.

You have many things to worry about while playing golf, but your feet shouldn’t be one of them. When it comes to golf shoes, quality counts.

If you are thinking about purchasing new golf shoes, or if you are just into golf, please go to our website called Golfing Tips for Beginners

Executives’ Gifts

For those elite people in business, who have probably known the finer things in life, personalization is the key for the perfect retirement gift. It must be something that lets them remember their time in the company, where they had slaved for decades to get to the position of their dreams.

The present should be something to do with their former business life, and which, after their whole life-time of profitable deals and perfect investments, reminds them of those business-related activities that gave them pleasure and therefore that will give them pleasure again. These two concepts are fundamental and necessary to stimulate the former executive to remember about their working lives, and of course, the one who had given them the gift.

The Golfer: Nothing says elitism and enthusiasm more than the sport of golf. The number of shops selling golf clubs, gloves, golf-carts and the like has rocketed over the years due to the rise in industries like hedge fund investing and financial advisors in general. More business people just means more golfers since golf is the sport where most of them do deals and get to know each other. Further evidence of this, is that golf courses are becoming more commonplace in rising countries like India and China, where Mission Hills and many other courses are often advertised in the sporting media.

All it takes is some creative thinking. For example, you could emblazon their company logo, family seal or monogram on some golf balls, markers, tees or their golf bag to display that certain kind of elitism that they relish. For those who like to take friends to the golf course with them, nothing says group bonding more than personalized golf shirts for the four friends!

If they have played particularly well in a memorable golf tournament, a small personalized scorecard print will also stimulate memories just as much as photos do. With their podium photos and ranks immortalized for ever, you can conjure up the spirit of the golf competition and help the golfer (and other participants) to relive the moment just as if they were replaying and enjoying the game again.

Recreational Gambling: A lot of executive figures like to spend some of their spare time in casinos, where they flaunt their opulence and attempt to win more too. Such people live life in the fast lane, as hey say, gaining and losing a lot of money as spend their free time. The perfect gift for this type of person, are gifts that represent his/her lifestyle, like a personally branded cigar or a monogrammed cigar case and cutter. What do you think about a personalized deck of cards with the logo that represents the retiree’s former trade or industry?

You could also go in for the classic present of expensive wine or champagne, the taste of which will remind them of the high life by its fantastic taste. A bottle of Lafite, Brut or Mensil are on this list. Giving ex top-flight executives these universal symbols of privilege would contribute vastly to the ideal retirement party for them. A cigar case personalized with a monogram and expensive wine do go a long way in this direction.

The Conclusion: Nothing else will remind them of their former lifestyles more than personalized items that represent their former way of life. Giving these kinds of gifts to retiring executives will be spot on. They ought to be able to live their golden years the way they want to and thinking along the lines of luxury and personalization will help you find the best retirement gift for them quite easily.

Kids Shorts: A Summer Sale

My wife and I spent hours searching online for a store that would give us a great deal on kids’ shorts. We surfed through store after store before finally going the old-fashioned way; we hit up the local stores to see if they had what we wanted.

I got tired of that option fast, so we decided to head home and try our luck again with the Internet. Halfway home, we discovered a store in Provo that looked like it could be promised. I pulled the car over, and my family got out and went inside the store.

Right when we entered, we were greeted by a store employee, who asked if we needed any help. I told her no and that we would find her if we needed anything. Then I headed to the boys section at the back of the store.

They had all sorts of options in this store. I was impressed and began to sift through the mass amount of options before me. They had all sorts of sizes and colors.

I had my son come over to the dressing rooms and try some on. But they fit funny. We ran into another young man there that told us that he has always had the same experience here.

The young man told us about an online store he used; it had a wide variety of products and he’d always had a good experience shopping with them. He told me the web address and to check it out. He also told me they have a sizable inventory of kids’ shorts.

This was great news for me. I’d gone to so many different places looking for what we needed and hadn’t been able to find anything. I gathered my family and we went home.

I logged on and checked it out and was impressed. I am so glad that I got the chance to visit the website because we ended up buying a huge amount of clothing for the school year and I even found my little nephew a few things. The prices were great and the selection was huge.

This store is great for anyone who’s looking for kids’ clothes, especially boys. I loved it and will be shopping there again when the boys need more clothes. I have also told all of my friends about it, and many of them have gone there to do their shopping as well.

If you’re looking to find great deals on kids shorts, then visit www.coolaidbrigade.com to find great kids shorts and other cool-kid apparel.
