Experts predicted that we would be hydrogen cars by now but it appears they were wrong. Sure, we’ve got plenty of non-traditional vehicles including hybrids and electric autos around but not that many hydrogen cars at all. We”l explore of these cars are viable for the future.
It’s very rare when you see one cruising down the street except in California once in a while. Many people automatically associate the word hydrogen with a big explosion or something truly outrageous but hydrogen technology has actually been around for quite some time. In fact, the technology for using hydrogen to power a vehicle has existed since the first part of the 19th Century.
The benefit of hydrogen is that it doesn’t produce any emissions and therefore doesn’t damage the environment and ozone layer. There are basically two type of hydrogen cars;one in which the hydrogen directly powers an internal combustion engine and a one that utilizes a fuel cell as a power source to power everything. The fuel cell is a device which converts hydrogen to electricity.
The problem with fuel cells is that it’s costly to make them; it takes rare materials in order to build the fuel cell. Hydrogen fuel is a substance that needs to be made such as methane or other fossil fuels. It can also be a byproduct of such resources as wind, solar or nuclear. Using these resources is not practical when a motor vehicle is involved. Thus the need for the fuel cell.
Even though the price of gas is around $4 a gallon these days, that’s still way cheaper than the cost of hydrogen. The equivalent of one gallon of gas in hydrogen would cost around $15 at the very least. Hydrogen is way more expensive. In addition, there are very few hydrogen stations. California has thirteen which is more than any other state.
