When it comes to a family favorite, pizza is taking the place of burgers and dogs. Of course when you make the pizza yourself you not only get a great pizza, but you create quality family time. And for those of you who have the option, cooking the pizza in an outdoor pizza oven will make it taste all the better.
OK, first things first, before you start anything make sure that if it is possible, that you only use the freshest ingredients possible. Fresh ingredients will make your final pizza taste so much better than using frozen pizza dough and canned sauce. But then again a pizza is a pizza and will taste good no matter what.
Now before you get started in making the pizza you need to warm up your oven. Load the oven with wood and light it. This way once your pizza is made you can simply slide it into the oven which should be warmed up. In order to cook a thin crust pizza the oven should be heated to about 550 degrees. If all you have is a regular kitchen oven, it may not get to that temperature just get it as hot as possible.
When forming the crust, be sure that it is at room temperature, this will make the dough easier to shape. If you notice that no matter how much you stretch the dough it keeps pulling back into a smaller shape, stretch the dough as best as you can and let it set for 5 to 10 minutes. Then go back and it should stretch out to where you want it.
As for the pizza sauce or marinara, in my opinion less is more. I prefer a pizza with just a little bit of sauce. However there are people out there who like to have their pizza swimming in the sauce, which is fine. But you should never use too much sauce, simply because the pizza could turn out to be rather soggy.
While mozzarella cheese is the traditional cheese to add to your pizza, you can use any type of cheese you want. I like to get fresh mozzarella, slice it very thin and place it on the pizza. Then I will take just a little cheddar cheese and grate it over the top of the mozzarella. It gives the mozzarella a nice little kick. Of course you can add any kind of cheese you want.
Now for the fun part. You created your masterpiece and now it is time to slide it into your outdoor pizza oven, or your kitchen oven if you don’t yet have an outdoor pizza oven. Your oven should be heated to about 550 degrees and it should only take about 8 to 10 minutes to cook a thin crust pizza. If you prefer a thicker crust, lower the temperature to about 450 and cook the pizza a little longer. Now you have to realize that all ovens cook differently. The times listed here are approximate and you really should keep an eye on your pizzas until you know exactly how long to cook your pies in your oven.
