When you want to add style to your house, one way of doing this and adding security at the same time, is by having window shutters fixed to the exterior of your house. Exterior window shutters add a traditional, Mediterranean look to a property. These days, most houses have glass windows, but before that, people used shutters to regulate the light levels, prevent insects and the cold from entering and for protection.

Exterior window shutters are available in many different shapes and made from various materials, although the most common ones are wooden and oblong. The quality of the materials used will influence how long your shutters will last, because, as with all exterior goods, they will be exposed to all forms of extreme weather conditions.

Plastic, vinyl, metal and wooden shutters are available at many home improvement centres. Although they look fantastic, shutters also have practical uses. They can prevent glaring noon sunlight from over heating your home as well as offering protection.

Cedar wood is a good choice, as are most other hard woods. Hardwoods are more resistant to rain and sunlight and, so long as they are painted, varnished or oiled regularly – at least once a year – then your shutters will give you ten or more years of effective service.

Most varieties of hardwood are very resistant to attack from insects too. This is because a lot of them contain oils that are repugnant or even toxic to insects. However, if you are unsure about the quality of the timber that your shutters are made from, you can paint them.

Painting, staining or oiling is far simpler if you carry it out before you hang the shutters. If you want to use oil to take care of your new wooden shutters, first stain them to the colour that you want them to be with a stain without varnish. When you have accomplished the desired shade and it has dried, pour oil linseed oil onto a cloth and rub it into the wood in circular motions. The more coats you give it the better, but it may not take more that two or three coats.

If you want to varnish your shutters, either stain them to the colour you require as above and then seal them with clear yacht varnish or use a stained yacht varnish without the stain. Whichever way you go, thin the first coat of varnish down until it is almost watery. Paint it on and leave to dry. Rub it down with medium coarse sandpaper and then coat it again with neat varnish. Wait for it to dry and sand it down again, but with fine sandpaper. Add at least one more coat, but it is a matter of the more the better.

If you want to paint them, apply a primer or some thinned down undercoat. Wait for it to dry and sand it lightly with fine sandpaper. Next, put on a coat of undercoat that is appropriate for the finishing colour. For example, grey is good for black, brown and even green or red. Sand it down when it is dry with fine paper. Finally, gloss your shutters with the final colour.

In conclusion, hang the shutters on appropriate hinges using brass screws. Next time, you paint or varnish your shutters paint over the screw heads, although brass never looks out of place anyway.

If you have a backyard or back garden, you can have a fish pond. They are not expensive to build and if you do it yourself it is obviously even cheaper. You can make your own pond pretty easily, you just have to keep a few points in mind when you plan where you are going to put it and how big it will be.

A backyard fish pond is fantastic for all kinds of households. Tending a backyard fish pond is not difficult and the mild exercise can be good for you. it is also therapeutic to watch the fish and other pond life going about their routine business and children will learn a bit more about nature,

It is important to plan your pond before you pick up your spade and the first thing to think about is where you are going to place it. Try not to put it under a tree or you will be dredging leaves out of your pond every day in autumn. Do not put the pond at the lowest point in your garden or it may overflow when it rains and your fish may swim away which means that you will need to sandbag it before it rains every time..

The noon sun can be very hot, so it would help if the pond had at least partial shade between 11 AM and 2 PM. If your locale is subject to freezing then the pond should be 30-45 inches deep for at least 4 m2 or 36 ft2, although if the winter can be really severe, it is best to seek advice from a neighbourhood pet shop. Have a look at the pre-formed fish ponds in a garden or pond centre to see if you like those shapes and sizes. If you do not, then you can buy a butyl pond liner (a sheet of rubber) and design your own pond.

After you have dug out your backyard fish pond and put your pre-formed or butyl liner into the hole, you should finish off the pond’s edge with either brick, block or stone. Use similar materials to build a few caves in the pond itself for the fish to take cover in. You can also anchor the fountain and any under-water lighting. Fill the pond with water, but do not put any living thing into it yet. Put the rest of your equipment in.

You will require a general purpose pump to send water to the pond filter, which should be two or three feet higher than the water level. The water will then have to pass through a filter to remove plant debris and faeces and under a UV light to kill bacteria. It can return to the pond via a waterfall, which will help oxygenate the water as will the fountain.

After a week, the water will have lost the chemicals like chlorine which the water company puts into it and you can buy plants and fish, but do not rush into it. You may want to build a few shelves to put flower pots on for the aquatic plants that have need of them.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is at present concerned with fish pond accessories.

There is no doubt that lighting has the biggest influence on atmosphere and. Subtle lighting in a bedroom or at an cozy dinner creates a romantic ambiance; bright, purposeful lighting in the office or kitchen shows that you mean business; dimmed lighting in the living room creates a calming atmosphere in which to watch a film or read a book.

Understated, back lighting behind flowers or a waterfall leads to a magical atmosphere, whereas severe floodlights turned on by a motion sensor would freeze most intruders in their tracks.

Getting the lighting wrong can have a seriously unfavourable effect on any room or occasion. Imagine a romantic dinner for two by candlelight and then imagine it by a naked 100 watt bulb hanging from the ceiling or a fluorescent tube.

It is said that the average household can save at least twenty-five percent on its electricity bills by using lighting more effectively and therefore more efficiently. More importantly, you could save more than sixty percent, if you swap from the normal incandescent light bulbs to high-output compact fluorescent lights. Sixty percent is a massive saving for you, your country and your planet.

Here are some of the ways that you can achieve savings on the energy you currently expend on lighting.

Make the addition of dimmers wherever you use lighting. You can put a touch lamp dimmer into the wiring of any lamp, so that when you touch it, it changes from low, to medium, to high, to off. You will be surprised how often you will lower the light once you are able to, particularly in the case of desk or table lamps and standard floor lamps.

In a similar vein is the touch switch that you can utilize to control lighting that traditionally hangs from the ceiling. You will be able to turn down the lights in any room and on the patio or deck too.

Photosensitive devices turn whatever they regulate off or on when the sun comes up. This is useful if you have motion-activated anti-intruder lighting. There is absolutely no need for it in the daytime, but you do not want to have to remember to switch it off in the mornings and reactivate it every night either.

Another use could be to turn the fishpond fountain off when it gets dark. All of these photosensitive switches can have over-ride switches too. These photosensitive devices will virtually half the cost of running the systems to which they are attached.

It is very easy to make fairly substantial savings if you put your mind to it. Just rearranging your furniture to take maximum advantage of natural light can help a lot too. Sitting near a window or in the garden to read the newspaper is far better than having to switch the kitchen light on to read it in there.

In the evening it is better to turn off all the main lights in the living room if you are watching television or reading a book and place one standard floor lamp just to one side behind you. It is sufficient to read by or to save your eyes from the strain of watching TV in the dark.

Were you aware that Eastern Equine Encephalitis can be spread to humans? It is rare, but mosquitoes can give humans EEE and at least one resident of Middleborough can confirm it. What is more EEE is worse for humans than West Nile Virus, which is spread by the same species of mosquito in the North East of the United States.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis attacks the brain and the nervous system and frequently either kills of leaves its victim in significant trouble.

The one man who is known to have been contaminated with EEE in NE America in August 2010, is still in an invalid chair a year afterward and there is no anticipated end to his pain.

The health authorities in close by Plymouth and Bristol counties where there were also plenty of these mosquitoes (Culex pipiens) last year have warned that this could be a bad year for them as well.

They warned householders to begin on home defence by repairing fractured and damaged fly screens now. They have also recommended clearing up mosquitoes’ breeding grounds.

This involves up-turning any containers that could hold water for them to breed in. Do not forget that a mosquito only needs a half inch of water to lay 400 eggs. Drill holes in flower pots and long forgotten tyres so that they cannot retain water any more.

Old tyres are cited as one of the foremost reasons for the increase of mosquitoes and the dispersion of new species.

The next couple of weeks are the linchpin of how many mosquitoes will be around later in the summer and autumn. The more you exterminate now, the fewer there will be to breed further generations and mosquitoes can breed a new generation roughly every month.

That is 1×400x400×400 mosquitoes each quarter for every mosquito that escapes. A great-grandmother mosquito can become responsible for 64 million offspring every quarter!

These mosquitoes (C. pipiens) breed in water, but hang out in damp, dark undergrowth, so you could spray in there as well. Some local authorities have been out spraying the parks and verges, but you can do your bit by taking care of your own micro-environment – your backyard, shed and garage.

EEE has not been seen this year in the North East so far, but West Nile Virus has been encountered twice already. The weather has been ideal for mosquitoes – rain followed by warm weather.

The indications of West Nile and Easter Equine are comparable to those of flu. The difference is that around 1% of those with WNF might die, but far more with EEE will almost certainly die. Around a third will suffer permanent brain damage

People are worried by last year’s incident. For example, the authorities in Plymouth County have already received almost 10,000 requests to spray against mosquitoes. This situation can only get worse unless residents help by checking their gardens and nearby garbage ground for likely breeding sites and destroying them. But it is not easy, mosquitoes can breed in a waste potato chip packet, so refuse becomes a big topic too.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece writes on more than a few topics, but is now involved with how to stop mosquito bite itch.

Winnipeg has long been Canada’s mosquito capital, but Edmonton is challenging it this year. These days, mosquito traps in Edmonton are catching five times more mosquitoes that those in Winnipeg. Rainy spells followed by warm weather are responsible for the colossal rise in the number of these maddening insects.

Inhabitants of Edmonton are asking for a substantial increase in the budget to combat the mosquito populace which can carry West Nile Virus. West Nile Virus delivers symptoms similar to a severe bout of flu, although older and younger victims have passed away from epidemics. County health officials are considering spraying public areas before official public festivals to reduce the incidence of biting.

On the other side of the world, in Sidney, Australia, the parks department has also begun its anti-mosquito spraying plan and residents are invited to call in to become added to a ‘no spray’ list, if they are afraid of the toxicity of the insect spray. It is considered that most people will prefer having their block and backyard sprayed as the numbers of mosquitoes are rising there too.

However, the spraying program has always proved a success in the past and will like continue to be so. This year it will be supplemented by poisoning ponds and lakes with larvacide, which is a more helpful form of control adding fish to the ponds that consume mosquito larvae would be an even better manner. The tablets are known as Altosid and last for 30 days, although they are also considering using XR which works for 150 days.

West Nile Virus is also a difficulty in Sidney, although there have not been any recorded cases yet. This means nothing though as most individuals who get WNF think that they have a summer cold. The city health authorities say that they are continuing to trap mosquitoes and carry out autopsies on dead birds to get an early notification of a likely WNV epidemic.

The city health department is warning all those over 50 years of age and those with a weakened immune system to take extra care by using a repellent including DEET, picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oil on bare skin and by wearing long trousers and long-sleeved shirts at dusk and at dawn.

They are also recommending doing basic maintenance and repairs about the home and garden. In particular, fly screens ought to be repaired and all stagnant water should be drained. They advise drilling holes in any old tyres and containers that can hold water, because mosquitoes just need a half inch of water to breed.

In the meantime, in the States, anti-mosquito activity is also being pursued. It appears that wherever you go in the world, the local authorities are attempting to do something concerning the number of mosquitoes. Do they know something that we don’t?

Like in Sidney and Edmonton, they too are worried around the Developed world Nile Infection which seems to have crowd running afraid all over the world.

In Jacksonville, they are also recommending that individuals remove the mosquito’s breeding grounds from gardens and garbage ground by up-turning any bin that could hold water after rainfall. They also advocate unblocking drains and gutters.

They caution about keeping your animals safe from Eastern Equine Encephalitis during dawn and dusk and keeping yourself protected by wearing long clothing at dawn and dusk. Finally, they say to rub DEET on all bare fields of skin.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece writes on many topics, but is currently involved with finding natural remedies for mosquito bites.

It if truth be told is imperative to sustain the ph of your home pools at the right level, keeping track of it often, and altering if required. Testing once weekly with dependable test strips or test drops is awfully important. In an ideal world you wish the ph value of your garden pools to be 7.2, or as close as viable to the amount, though everything through 7.0 – 7.6 is usually thought of as an appropriate limit.

If the ph value is beyond 7.6 it follows that the pool is excessively alkaline, that may cause a variety of concerns. The swimming pool can unfortunately quickly grow to be filthy because the ph will render the majority of the sanitizer ineffective – in actual fact, it can take 8 times the usual chlorine dose in the event that ph level is simply too elevated. The pool water usually will be murky, which makes it awfully unlikable for dipping.

Calcium buildup may also crop up, which may begin staining, and if it is not modified, high pH may instigate dark marking to build up in the region of the waterline of the pool. If you have Swim spas with a particle filter, you will discover it does not work as efficiently as normal.

In the event that ph level in your pool is under 7 then the swimming pool water is excessively acidic, which sometimes can additionally bring about harm to your pool and components. The level of destruction will depend upon the construction materials the pool is constructed from. Pool sides could become grooved and pitted, and the acidic water may instigate rust to metallic workings inside the Swimming Pools. In time you might have to renew apparatus. A lot of acid can absorb chlorine utilized, making your pool water turn milky, and enabling micro organism to grow .

There might in addition be a powerful whiff of chlorine to the water, which may be a factor to red eyes and the skin drying out excessively. Many owners suppose they ought to supplement ever more chlorine however the problem is usually thanks to incorrect pH.

We’ve not had the space to write too much detail, however in this brief editorial it’s plain pH is rather significant in ensuring that your Swimming Pool, water and guests stay joyful and fit. It’s most important to monitor pH conscientiously and frequently, to make sure you can actually dodge any troubles before they have a chance to arise. Shrewd, repeated preservation will be preferable instead of costly renovations that may be needed when long term issues are triggered as a result of improper swimming pool makeup.

Mosquito is a familiar insect which belongs to the family Culicidae. The word mosquito is of Spanish and Portuguese origin which translates as ?little fly?. A mosquito passes through four phases in its life cycle i.e. egg, larva, pupa and adult. The fully developed mosquito is also called an imago. Eggs are laid by adult females in still water like puddles, lakes, ponds, or containers etc.

The life of an grown-up mosquito is four-eight weeks long. The mouthparts of mosquitoes are adapted to pierce the skin of animals and plants. Males feed on nectar and the juices of plants while the females need to feed on blood to obtain nutrients in order to lay eggs. Over 3,500 species of mosquitoes are to be found in the world.

The females of some species feed on humans and are the cause of many infectious illnesses. Egg development and blood digestion are two very important events in the life of female mosquitoes. They serve as a vector to transfer viruses and parasites from one person to another.

Mosquito control is vital for getting rid of harmful mosquitoes and the illnesses spread by them. It is estimated that mosquitoes spread diseases to over 700 million individuals in Asia, Africa, Mexico, Central America and South America. Numerous deaths are the result of infectious illnesses brought about by the bites of mosquitoes.

When mosquito control was less common, thousands of deaths were caused each year. Malaria and yellow fever were known to be the result of by mosquito bites. WestNile fever is also borne by mosquitoes. Dengue virus and Encephalitis are other contagious illnesses caused by mosquitoes.

Natural enemies of mosquitoes include the dragonfly which assists control the population of mosquitoes by eating them. The reaction to the bites of mosquitoes can be instantaneous or delayed. The irritation on the bites is the result of an immunity response.

Several anti-itch medicines are obtainable on the market. Some medications are taken orally whilst others are for external use only. Itching can be minimized by applying an adhesive tape to the region of the bite or by sucking on the region through a straw.

A very effectual anti-inflammatory agent is Tea tree oil, which lessens itching. Insecticides can also be used to kill the larvae of the mosquito. Source reduction is a very efficient way to control mosquitoes by removing stagnant water. Biocontrol is a different remedy by which natural enemies of mosquitoes are used to manage their numbers.

Chemical pesticides can kill adult mosquitoes because they are the most harmful from the point of view of spreading disease. DDT was used for the control of mosquitoes on a large scale but now it?s use is banned in some countries. Different sorts of repellents are used to discourage mosquitoes from biting. DEET is used as an good repellent.

Picaridin and IR3535 are also very widely used CDC-recommended repellents. Oil of Eucalyptus is a natural repellent and it is highly recommended. It is very important to take safety precautions to protect yourself from the contagious illnesses borne by mosquitoes.

The mosquito is the cause of many contagious illnesses e.g. malaria, yellow fever and dengue fever etc. In fact, it serves as a vector to transmit such illnesses from person to person. Mosquito control is the method used to manage mosquito numbers. Different ways are used to control mosquitoes from increasing and spreading diseases.

Occasionally, regulating the source of reproduction and growth of mosquitoes is achieved by decreasing their number i.e. removing standing water. Natural predators like dragonflies, mosquito fish and killifish are used to prey on mosquitoes.

In this fashion their population is kept under control and the likelihood for mosquitoes to cause any damage are reduced. Different kinds of insecticides are also used to kill mosquitoes.

A mosquito repellent serves the purpose of saving an individual from the strike of mosquitoes which could cause serious damage to the health of the individual. A mosquito repellent is a substance which is used to repel and discourage mosquitoes from landing and biting. The out beak of mosquito-borne diseases can be managed and prevented by the use of such repellents.

The body chemistry of each person is different, which is why some individuals attract mosquitoes more than others and become a part of a mosquito?s? menu more frequently. Study shows that synthetic repellents are more effectual than natural repellents. The reason is the long lasting nature of synthetic repellents.

DEET and IR3535 are very frequently used repellents. DEET is a somewhat yellowish oil which is applied to the body or clothing to deter mosquitoes. It must be used very carefully because it can cause skin reactions and irritation.

DEET is the oldest repellent in use; it having been developed in 1946. Its protection lasts for about five hours. IR3535 is a chemical repellent which is found in Avon products such as their ?Skin So Soft? range of products.

Rather than applying synthetic repellents, natural repellents can be made by combining different natural oils in precise concentrations depending on the type of mosquito. Citronella oil, lemon eucalyptus, clove oil, cedar oil, lemongrass oil, rosemary oil and cinnamon oil are the most popular oils used as natural mosquito repellents. The refined form of oil of Lemon eucalyptus is a very effectual insect repellent.

Mosquito coils i.e. mosquito-repelling incense, is also commonly used in Asia, South America and Africa. It is usually a coil made of Pyrethrum powder, shaped into a spiral. Contemporary mosquito-repelling coils burn for about eight hours without a flame.

Their ability to repel mosquitoes is very strong; it is also cheap and easy to use. Health and safety concerns are of great importance when using such coils. The spark from the coil can ignite a fire and the smoke releases formaldehyde which is very harmful to health.

Children and pregnant women should use mosquito repellents very carefully. The label on the repellent must be read very carefully before use and the directions ought to be followed strictly. Mosquito repellents ought to be kept out of the reach of children because of their harmful effects on health.

If you own a swimming pool, you have to be aware of the safety aspects concerning that pool. There is no counter-argument, that is one of the legal duties of an owner of a swimming pool . You are going to get people coming around who cannot swim; people who have eaten or drunken too much and should not swim; children and skinny-dipping teenage intruders and you have to provide a safe environment in which to swim for all or them or deny access.

The first area of swimming pool safety to undertake is the denial of access and the easiest way of doing this is the erection of a security fence. It will deny access to passing children, interlopers and people who came around to see you on the off-chance when you were not in.

There are thousands of drownings by misadventure in garden swimming pools each year – most of them are children and drunks, who would still be alive today, if the pool had been locked up.

If you have your own children who are unable to swim, get them taught as soon as you can and drill some safety routines into them. For example, they must never get in the pool without an adult overseeing them and they should always wear flotation devices, which means that you should always have flotation devices on hand.

You will require waist rings, arm bands and life jackets. Those for use in a swimming pool by children are not costly and can be inflatable. It is also a good idea to have some pieces of styrofoam floating about just in case someone gets tired all of a sudden.

Make sure that there is always a competent swimmer on hand who knows basic First Aid, especially artificial respiration with specific reference to drowning. In fact, why not take the whole family down to the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade and all get your life-savers certificate? The least you should have is a proper life belt – ocean-going – on a rope that is long enough to reach anywhere in your pool and tie off the loose end.

It might be possible to get away with not having a security fence, if you use an above ground swimming pool, but you will have to check with the local authorities on that one. You will also have to take away the access ladders when it is not in use. Forgetting to do so could equate to criminal negligence if anyone were to drown in your pool.

Swimming pool safety is primarily about saving lives but it is also about the peace of mind of the owner of the swimming pool. If someone were to drown in your pool and you knew that you had not done everything within your power to avert it, you would probably carry that burden of guilt with you for the remainder of your life, particularly if it was a child and even more so if it was your child or the child of one of your guests.

Gardening would be a great deal simpler without interference from garden pests. Most garden pests are small, but they sure are a big hassle. The the majority of common garden pests are insects, of course and it is a curious thing that these insects tend to prosper in circumstances that are not quite right for flowers. Most garden pests do not actually live on the plants themselves, they live in rotting rubbish nearby or in saturated soil and go to the plant to feed. Some insects live in the roots if the earth is too wet.

So, one of the first things to do is to try to reduce the number of destructive insects in your garden. You can go a long way down this route by clearing away any old rotting rubbish and decayed wood. Make sure that your soil is well drained and keep cats out of your garden by squirting them with a water pistol until they get the idea. Cats frighten birds and many birds feed on insects.

You should also encourage insects and other animals that eat garden pests. Ants can be a pain, but they do eat a lot of insects. Ladybirds do too and so do spiders. Larger animals such as frogs, toads and lizards eat loads of insects, so a small open-ended garden pond could be used to breed frogs and toads. Lizards will appear on their own, if the conditions are perfect.

It is worth taking active steps to encourage the right sort of garden animals. Never use powerful insecticides on your garden as you will destroy all the insects that are on your side as well and the spray may poison the earthworms that are helping to aerate and dry out your soil.

A small pond will encourage birds, frogs and toads, but frogs and toads also like a nice rock to shelter under during the day. Place a few rocks the size of a loaf of bread around your garden in the shadow of trees or bushes. Erect a bird table. Birds that eat bread and nuts do not usually feed on insects, but some do. However, the sight of other birds in your garden may encourage insectivores to come in and have a look.

There are basically two types of garden pests: the ones that actually eat the plant and the ones that extract the sap out of it. Caterpillars can be picked off and destroyed of or you can spray the leaves that are being eaten with a poison for the caterpillars to feed on. Many of the sap-suckers can be seen with no trouble, others cannot. A solution of washing-up liquid and water such as you use to wash dishes will kill the majority of of these including greenfly (aphids).

Slugs and snails do a lot of damage, but some birds including chickens and thrushes find them a delicacy. Chickens can be helpful partners in a garden, but they can be detrimental too with all their scratching. Otherwise, you can reduce the population of slugs and snails by destroying their eggs.

They are apt to lay their eggs in decomposing leaves or rotting compost, but not in compost heaps which are normally too hot for them, so a good clean up will eradicate a lot of the next generation.

You can exterminate the adults by placing a few low containers of beer near your plants. The slugs will drink the beer and drown. It is extremely efficient. Slug pellets should kill the t-totallers off. Taking these measures will greatly reduce the number of garden pests attacking your plants.

Owen Jones, the author of this article writes on quite a few subjects, but is at present concerned with exterior wall lighting.
