Mosquitoes In The North-East USA

Were you aware that Eastern Equine Encephalitis can be spread to humans? It is rare, but mosquitoes can give humans EEE and at least one resident of Middleborough can confirm it. What is more EEE is worse for humans than West Nile Virus, which is spread by the same species of mosquito in the North East of the United States.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis attacks the brain and the nervous system and frequently either kills of leaves its victim in significant trouble.

The one man who is known to have been contaminated with EEE in NE America in August 2010, is still in an invalid chair a year afterward and there is no anticipated end to his pain.

The health authorities in close by Plymouth and Bristol counties where there were also plenty of these mosquitoes (Culex pipiens) last year have warned that this could be a bad year for them as well.

They warned householders to begin on home defence by repairing fractured and damaged fly screens now. They have also recommended clearing up mosquitoes’ breeding grounds.

This involves up-turning any containers that could hold water for them to breed in. Do not forget that a mosquito only needs a half inch of water to lay 400 eggs. Drill holes in flower pots and long forgotten tyres so that they cannot retain water any more.

Old tyres are cited as one of the foremost reasons for the increase of mosquitoes and the dispersion of new species.

The next couple of weeks are the linchpin of how many mosquitoes will be around later in the summer and autumn. The more you exterminate now, the fewer there will be to breed further generations and mosquitoes can breed a new generation roughly every month.

That is 1×400x400×400 mosquitoes each quarter for every mosquito that escapes. A great-grandmother mosquito can become responsible for 64 million offspring every quarter!

These mosquitoes (C. pipiens) breed in water, but hang out in damp, dark undergrowth, so you could spray in there as well. Some local authorities have been out spraying the parks and verges, but you can do your bit by taking care of your own micro-environment – your backyard, shed and garage.

EEE has not been seen this year in the North East so far, but West Nile Virus has been encountered twice already. The weather has been ideal for mosquitoes – rain followed by warm weather.

The indications of West Nile and Easter Equine are comparable to those of flu. The difference is that around 1% of those with WNF might die, but far more with EEE will almost certainly die. Around a third will suffer permanent brain damage

People are worried by last year’s incident. For example, the authorities in Plymouth County have already received almost 10,000 requests to spray against mosquitoes. This situation can only get worse unless residents help by checking their gardens and nearby garbage ground for likely breeding sites and destroying them. But it is not easy, mosquitoes can breed in a waste potato chip packet, so refuse becomes a big topic too.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece writes on more than a few topics, but is now involved with how to stop mosquito bite itch. If you want to know more, please go to our website at Getting Rid of Mosquito Bites.

The Fight Against Mosquitoes Around The Globe

Winnipeg has long been Canada’s mosquito capital, but Edmonton is challenging it this year. These days, mosquito traps in Edmonton are catching five times more mosquitoes that those in Winnipeg. Rainy spells followed by warm weather are responsible for the colossal rise in the number of these maddening insects.

Inhabitants of Edmonton are asking for a substantial increase in the budget to combat the mosquito populace which can carry West Nile Virus. West Nile Virus delivers symptoms similar to a severe bout of flu, although older and younger victims have passed away from epidemics. County health officials are considering spraying public areas before official public festivals to reduce the incidence of biting.

On the other side of the world, in Sidney, Australia, the parks department has also begun its anti-mosquito spraying plan and residents are invited to call in to become added to a ‘no spray’ list, if they are afraid of the toxicity of the insect spray. It is considered that most people will prefer having their block and backyard sprayed as the numbers of mosquitoes are rising there too.

However, the spraying program has always proved a success in the past and will like continue to be so. This year it will be supplemented by poisoning ponds and lakes with larvacide, which is a more helpful form of control adding fish to the ponds that consume mosquito larvae would be an even better manner. The tablets are known as Altosid and last for 30 days, although they are also considering using XR which works for 150 days.

West Nile Virus is also a difficulty in Sidney, although there have not been any recorded cases yet. This means nothing though as most individuals who get WNF think that they have a summer cold. The city health authorities say that they are continuing to trap mosquitoes and carry out autopsies on dead birds to get an early notification of a likely WNV epidemic.

The city health department is warning all those over 50 years of age and those with a weakened immune system to take extra care by using a repellent including DEET, picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oil on bare skin and by wearing long trousers and long-sleeved shirts at dusk and at dawn.

They are also recommending doing basic maintenance and repairs about the home and garden. In particular, fly screens ought to be repaired and all stagnant water should be drained. They advise drilling holes in any old tyres and containers that can hold water, because mosquitoes just need a half inch of water to breed.

In the meantime, in the States, anti-mosquito activity is also being pursued. It appears that wherever you go in the world, the local authorities are attempting to do something concerning the number of mosquitoes. Do they know something that we don’t?

Like in Sidney and Edmonton, they too are worried around the Developed world Nile Infection which seems to have crowd running afraid all over the world.

In Jacksonville, they are also recommending that individuals remove the mosquito’s breeding grounds from gardens and garbage ground by up-turning any bin that could hold water after rainfall. They also advocate unblocking drains and gutters.

They caution about keeping your animals safe from Eastern Equine Encephalitis during dawn and dusk and keeping yourself protected by wearing long clothing at dawn and dusk. Finally, they say to rub DEET on all bare fields of skin.

Using Pet Friendly Rentals

The majority of people really love their pets, to the point where they become part of the family. Some pet owners cannot bear to be parted from their pets for more than a day or so and for these people, going on vacation can be a problem, because they do not want to leave their friends behind. Obviously the solution is to take your cat or dog with you. Dogs are easier to take away than cats, because they are more well-trained

If you are only going for a few days, say on business, finding a hotel near to the location of your meeting should not be too much of a problem, unless you want to stay at one of the big names in the city centre. It is usually the smaller, family-run hotels or guest houses that consent to pets, although some require you to keep your dog in a kennel on the premises overnight. larger hotels tend not to be very pet-friendly.

If you propose taking your pet with you, it is better if you make this clear when you make your booking as more hotels do not permit pets than do allow them. Normally there is no extra charge for a pet, but you are liable for any extra cleaning costs, should your pet get caught short.

If you are going away on vacation or for a longer period of time, it is sometimes far easier to find a holiday rental that will allow you to take your cat or dog with you. Again, it is best to make it obvious at booking that you want to take your dog with you. Fortunately, there are about fifty percent of rentals or more that will allow this, although once again, you will be held liable for any damage or mess made by your dog.

A tip: if on getting there, you see that previous pets have caused some damage or stains, take photographs on your first day and have them dated. Modern cameras often have the facility to date stamp photos or you can use a newspaper. Otherwise, point out the damage to your host.

When you travel with your dog, it is best to put the animal in some sort of a cage particularly when driving. A loving dog can be a distraction in a car. If it wants attention just when you are trying to perform a tricky manouevre, it can result in an accident. Some dogs get very frightened in cars and want to sit on their owner’s lap, this is also not a good idea and could lead to a charge of dangerous driving. Furthermore, if your dog is not caged and you have an accident, it could be thrown through the windscreen. If you are travelling by air, then the airline will insist on a cage, but they normally have their own.

Once you arrive at your pet-friendly rental, give your dog some of his normal food to eat, lay out his blanket from home, and put out one of his favourite toys, just to help make him feel at home. After all, everything will be strange to him and he might be able to smell the previous furry tenant. If cleaning staff will be entering your rental during your holiday, make sure that you are there at least for the first few times they visit.

Garden Swimming Pool Safety

If you own a swimming pool, you have to be aware of the safety aspects concerning that pool. There is no counter-argument, that is one of the legal duties of an owner of a swimming pool . You are going to get people coming around who cannot swim; people who have eaten or drunken too much and should not swim; children and skinny-dipping teenage intruders and you have to provide a safe environment in which to swim for all or them or deny access.

The first area of swimming pool safety to undertake is the denial of access and the easiest way of doing this is the erection of a security fence. It will deny access to passing children, interlopers and people who came around to see you on the off-chance when you were not in.

There are thousands of drownings by misadventure in garden swimming pools each year – most of them are children and drunks, who would still be alive today, if the pool had been locked up.

If you have your own children who are unable to swim, get them taught as soon as you can and drill some safety routines into them. For example, they must never get in the pool without an adult overseeing them and they should always wear flotation devices, which means that you should always have flotation devices on hand.

You will require waist rings, arm bands and life jackets. Those for use in a swimming pool by children are not costly and can be inflatable. It is also a good idea to have some pieces of styrofoam floating about just in case someone gets tired all of a sudden.

Make sure that there is always a competent swimmer on hand who knows basic First Aid, especially artificial respiration with specific reference to drowning. In fact, why not take the whole family down to the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade and all get your life-savers certificate? The least you should have is a proper life belt – ocean-going – on a rope that is long enough to reach anywhere in your pool and tie off the loose end.

It might be possible to get away with not having a security fence, if you use an above ground swimming pool, but you will have to check with the local authorities on that one. You will also have to take away the access ladders when it is not in use. Forgetting to do so could equate to criminal negligence if anyone were to drown in your pool.

Swimming pool safety is primarily about saving lives but it is also about the peace of mind of the owner of the swimming pool. If someone were to drown in your pool and you knew that you had not done everything within your power to avert it, you would probably carry that burden of guilt with you for the remainder of your life, particularly if it was a child and even more so if it was your child or the child of one of your guests.

Relaxing In The Bath

Most individuals like soaking in the bath, even those individuals who say that you can not get clean in a bath. It is very relaxing, but there are some things that can increase your enjoyment of relaxing in the bath. Most of these accessories for relaxing in the bath are good for Jacuzzis. hot tubs, spas and normal baths.

The first thing that helps make a bath more relaxing is bubble bath. You should not use bubble bath in a hot tub – hot spa with a filter, because it can clog up the filter, but bath salts are a decent alternative to bubble bath. A waterproof pillow also helps you relax in the bath.

Aromatic bath salts or bubble bath can have a very hypnotic influence, so be sure that you do not fall asleep, particularly if you are indulging in my second favourite way of relaxing in the bath. I like to have a few glasses of red wine in the bath, but in that case you have to be very careful not to fall asleep, especially if you have had a hard day.

If you are fond of a romantic bath alone or with a friend, candles are the way to go. Get the large, thick candles so that they will not burn down or fall over. Candles can be perilous if you do not place them on candle holders or loose tiles, which is why I advocate thick candles. Again they can be aromatic.

Many of people like to listen to music in the bath, but be cautious of using anything that necessitates mains power whilst you are in the water. It is better to use a battery powered or rechargeable unit for replaying your music.

If you have a spare CD player, you could build it into an outdoor hot tub and run it off the mains for the pump, but just place it out of reach of the tub. Use a remote if you need to control it. Bathing in the garden is excellent, but we can not all do that.

You can reconstruct an outdoor ambiance by putting potted plants in the bathroom. Some plants do not like a lot of light, but do like a humid atmosphere. Some orchids come into this bracket, but there ought to be plenty of others too – just ask at your garden centre.

Mirrors are romantic in the bathroom and will help the room look bigger and more full or candles and plants. The bathroom is frequently the smallest room in the house, so a few mirrors will help create it look bigger.

If you are in a standard bath indoors in the bathroom, you could fit a bubble mat. It is like a shower mat, but it pumps air and recycles water through holes in it, making it act a little like a hot tub spa. A bath bubble mat is no surrogate for a spa, but it is better than nothing and is fairly cheap.

Beautiful Inland Beach Cottage Rentals

When many people, singles and families alike, think about booking a holiday, many of them would only think about going to the beach for a fortnight’s lounging on the beach under the sun and swimming in warm, azure waters.

However, many of the best, most famous beach locations are magnets for crowds of people. It appears that most people like the sand, the sea and the sun. Now some people go to these places precisely because they are full of activity. They like the crowds and the night clubs that attract them. Mainly singles go to these types of destinations and a holiday affair is not far from many peoples’ minds.

Couples and older people may prefer a little less noise, pollution and commotion. However, there are beaches which meet these demands too. Often they are private beaches. Some have hotels on them but some do not. Those that do not frequently have inland beach cottage rental properties instead. These are nearly always self-catering.

When most people think of a beach it is automatically connected with the sea. However, this need not inevitably be so. There are also inland beaches on lakes and rivers. These beaches are usually referred to as inland beaches. Accommodation can be a problem with even some of the best inland beaches.

Many of these inland beaches are just not well-known enough to make a hotel commercially viable, but some of them have cottage rentals as an alternative. These cottages, or cabins sometimes, can be hard to find if you do not reserve early enough. They are frequently complete homes, fully equipped with all the household amenities you have grown used to: a fully furnished living room, multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and a modern kitchen.

Inland beach cottage rentals are popular because they are usually situated right on the water’s edge. This makes the bit of beach right before your cottage your private beach. You can sleep on it at night if it’s hot, lie there all day or set up a few fishing lines.

In the evenings, you can hitch up with neighbours to have a party or keep yourself to yourself. For this reason, it is a good thought to check photos of the cottage before you make a booking.

If an inland beach cottage rental sounds just up your street, there are thousands to pick from in the United States and Canada. The Great Lakes are a particularly beautiful place to go. There are excellent locations in the Finger Lakes region of New York state and along Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

You will not regret going on holiday to an inland beach cottage rental property. There are so many variations that there is certainly something for every pocket and every family size. Singles are not so well catered for, but if you want a quiet holiday alone. maybe to study, then this might fitting be for you too.

You can fly into some of these resorts by seaplane, but it is more likely that you will take your own car or a rental car, if you want to get out and do some exploring further afield. Personally, I would rather hire a dinghy.

Adopting The Beauty Of Moroccan Decor

Moroccan furniture is usually solid timber and stylish. Morocco is an ex-French colony, but it is very close to Spain as well. In fact, two small parts of Morocco, Melilla and Ceuta are still under Spanish control.

This means that Moroccan furnishings and decor has Berba, Arabic, French and Spanish influences. These Mediterranean influences are prominent in traditional and modern Moroccan furniture.

When combined with Moroccan decor and colours, Moroccan furniture can transform your home. Walls are normally emulsioned plain white or cream and lightly decorated with old carpets or tapestries with one or two photos or paintings hanging between them.

Reds and browns are the principal colours. Poignant writings from the Koran or other Arabic philosophers are often written out in bold script and framed.

Moroccan decorations such as lamps, lanterns, mirrors, benches, vases, mosaic end tables, ottomans, rugs and ceramics can add that remarkable local flavour to the decor, setting off the solid timber or padded cloth furniture.

Pillows feature large in Moroccan interior and garden decor, but they also use settees and chairs in the European fashion. Morocco is well-known for its leather craft and leather is often used to cover chairs, sofas and footstools or poufes.

Scatter rugs are important for sitting on and they are taken out and beaten each day to keep them clean as Morocco is a hot, sandy and dusty country when you travel a few miles inland from the coast. Camels are still used for transport in rural parts and camel hair is turned into rugs, blankets and wall coverings.

Moroccans like tiles and mosaics and Arabic style tiles are quite distinctive if you would like to use them in your bathroom and kitchen. If you would like to dine in Moroccan style, they usually eat at a very low round table with the primary dish in the centre from which everyone helps themselves, although in a family, some members will feed others as well.

Following convention and hygiene, you may only touch food with your right hand, although everybody will have washed both hands before coming to the table. Bread, rice and couscous feature highly in Moroccan food as does potatoes, carrots, lamb and chicken.Water is served during the meal and tea and coffee afterwards frequently with very sweet cakes sprinkled with icing sugar and syrup.

People take it easy at home wearing long, loose-fitting garments and lounge on benches or on rugs on the floor surrounded by cushions. In the evening, lighting will be low offered by low wattage bulbs concealed behind red and brown stained glass or cloth. Candles, scented or not also feature a great deal in living rooms and bedrooms unless someone wants a stronger light to read by.

Candles in wall sconces are popular methods to highlight special areas and light up corridors and some doorways. Often these sconces do not contain candles, but hold scented oil with a floating wick which is cheaper to leave burning between the hours or twilight and bed time.

Would You Recognize The Symptoms Of Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is the result of a virus that is transferred from person to person by the bite of a tiger striped mosquito. Dengue normally starts with high fever, chills, headache, pain behind the eyes, and joint and muscle pain making the individual look flushed with a rash appearing about three to four days after the onset of fever. The rash spreads to the rest of the body and shows up often as an swelling of the lymph nodes.

Dengue, in its most common form has an incubation phase of about |five to eight days from the onset of fever. It is worth mentioning that a person has fever for around four to seven days and it is usual for most people to recover without any major complications. However, long term effects and complications cannot be entirely ruled out in all instances, with some taking numerous months to recover and some having fatal recurrences.

This arises particularly in regions where dengue is endemic and there is the chance of repeated infections and relapses. The most serious of effects or complications are dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS).

Dengue hemorrhagic fever known as Hemorrhagic dengue, Dengue shock syndrome, Philippine hemorrhagic fever, Thai hemorrhagic fever or Singapore hemorrhagic fever can lead to dengue shock syndrome and proves fatal in about 1/20 cases that have a re-infection.

The severity of the impact of dengue in the form of dengue hemorrhagic fever rests basically on one contracting another virus after building immunity to one particular type of virus. The danger factors increase with having antibodies to dengue virus from a prior infection, being younger than 12, female, or Caucasian.

Look out for the effects of dengue hemorrhagic fever in the individual being not merely restless and irritable, but also becoming sweaty and acquiring shock-like symptoms. Minute spots of blood and bleeding could occur on the skin with substantial patches below the skin and negligible injuries causing severe bleeding. Some of the early indications that might be noticed are decreased appetite, fever, headache, joint pain, malaise, muscle pain, and vomiting.

Then you could notice more acute indications like restlessness followed by skin discoloration caused by the flow of blood into the tissues from ruptured blood vessels in mucous membranes especially in the mouth. There could also be a sweeping rash followed by flat round spots caused by internal bleeding in the skin from the capillaries.

This dengue situation could worsen and show up as a shock-like state, cold clammy extremities, and sweatiness. A GP could examine the patient and find other symptoms like enlarged liver, low blood pressure, red eyes, swollen glands, and weak and rapid pulse.

The treatment might include a cure of the indications and a transfusion of fresh blood or platelets to correct bleeding concerns, IV fluids and electrolytes to right electrolyte imbalances and oxygen therapy for treating the unusually low blood oxygen level and hydration with intravenous (IV) fluids to treat dehydration. In addition, supervision in an intensive care unit is usually essential.

It is imperative to approaching your medical professional in time during repeated attacks and to make sure of personal hygiene and cleanliness at home and its environs. Using fully-covering clothing, mosquito netting, mosquito repellent with DEET and avoiding travelling while mosquitoes are prevalent would help to contain dengue.

Hot Tub Developments Over The Years

Hut tubs have been commercially available for about 50 years, so you can guess that the technology has come a long way. In the early days, hot tubs were usually just a small round wooden tub that was bursting at the seams with over two individuals in it. They were invariably round in shape and there was very little choice.

The first hot tubs to appear in the States were seen in the 1940’s, but they were usually little more that than wooden barrels filled with hot water intended to give a long deep soak. In the 1950’s, the idea grew and families started to create or buy hot tubs in order to relax and to alleviate the indications of arthritis. By the mid 1960’s, individuals were adding home-manufactured heaters and pumps and very crude versions of the contemporary wooden hot tub were being born.

One early innovator was Roy Jacuzzi who developed and marketed the first hot tub that incorporated swirling water and jets. This whirlpool bath literally began the whole industry in 1968. In the early 1970’s, manufacturers started to incorporate more powerful jets into their hot tubs and some manufacturers began making more comfortable designs out of fibreglass and acrylic. The business was taking off big time.

Jacuzzi started to manufacture bigger models so that friends or a family could all enjoy the experience together. Most of the modernizations since the late 1970’s have been technical, but these technical improvements have been fairly serious.

The filters are more readily accessible nowadays which means that they are more likely to be cleaned as regularly as they ought to be in order to avoid the build up of bacteria from decomposing vegetation and hair. This will pollute the water and could create a health hazard. Not just that, but blocked filters means that the pump has to work harder to circulate the water which means more wear and tear and eventually, more money.

There is a greater choice of materials and colours these days. Before, the option was: what sort of wood do you prefer? Now you can still have that choice, plus the choice of any colour acrylic you would like as well. Or you can have an acrylic tub inside a wooden (or synthetic wood) exterior or skirt.

The advantages of the synthetic materials are that they last longer, are easier to clean and can be impregnated with a substance that kills or wards off bacteria and mould.

The seating arrangement can be personalized in contemporary spas to suit individual bathers. Every chair might have one or more directable jets and the chair itself might be made to a precise height for a specific person or for a certain injury or condition.

The water heating arrangements are a great deal more adaptable as well. Nowadays, the water can be warmed by gas, electricity, your homes central heating system or by solar power, which is a huge improvement if you live in a country that enjoys a great deal of sun.

To top it all off, you can add aromatherapy oils and spa salt crystals to the water by placing them in a draw like in a washing machine and have them circulated in the water evenly.

Ought Babies Be Smeared With Mosquito Repellent Creams?

Mosquitoes have caused various life threatening diseases in tropical countries such as India particularly during the monsoons. These small creatures carry disease causing viruses which cause malaria, filaria and dengue fever from one person to the other, from one animal to the other and from animal to human and vice versa.

It is good to note that mosquito repellents help to stave off mosquitoes for a short time dependent on the body sort, climatic conditions and state of the body, but can never obliterate them fully.

You could have a wide assortment of mosquito repellents, but not all of them might prove suitable and ideal for your infant. The choice varies between synthetic chemicals and plant derivatives that are discovered in the form of creams, lotions, sprays, wipes, roll-on sticks, foams, liquid vaporizers, sprays, coils, and mats. In addition, you can buy electronic items that depend on electromagnetic fields and ultrasound waves to repulse mosquitoes.

Your choice of the best repellent depends entirely on your baby?s requirements and the precautions that need to be taken. It is best to check with your child?s pediatrician or a dermatologist who will suggest the best mosquito repellent.

Pediatricians advise avoiding the use of mosquito repellent creams and lotions on children under the age of six months as these chemicals could result in allergic and toxic reactions when applied directly to the baby?s skin.

However, it is advised that if you have to use a cream or lotion it is best to consult your child specialist and then put the repellent to the child?s clothes making certain you avoid areas where the child could put it in its mouth.

The use of liquid vaporizers, coils, sprays, and foams are extremely unadvisable as they could cause breathing allergies and other issues in your baby. In case you must, take your baby in when the fumes are given off.

The use of baby mosquito nets and natural or herbal remedies are safer until the baby is older. Try lighting citronella candles to ward off mosquitoes in your infant’s room.

It is worth mentioning that essential oils like margosa, citronella, peppermint, and eucalyptus can help ward off mosquitoes, however it is inadvisable to apply these oils immediately on the skin as they are strong.

However putting a couple of drops on the bedding would be useful. Mopping the floors with a couple of drops of essential oils added to the water would help and prove safe also.

Prevention would be better rather than repelling mosquitoes particularly for children. Maintaining a clean home and avoiding stagnant water standing in coolers, flowerpots, open drains, small ponds, bird baths, pets’ utensils and other bodies of water and adding a couple of drops of paraffin oil in the water would prevent mosquitoes multiplying.

In addition, ensure your child does not perspire if you leave it unattended, for mosquitoes breed in moisture. It is best to dress your baby in light coloured clothes fully covering the body, which would also help prevent mosquito bites.

Furthermore, avoiding powerful fragrances in the form of lotions, soap, oils or floral scented perfumes or room fresheners would help avoid the attraction of mosquitoes. Also, storing food covered over always will help inhibit the breeding of mosquitoes.

Last but most important, fix wire mesh and screens on all doors and windows and keep them closed always especially during dawn and dusk and help your baby breathe fresh air but with freedom from mosquitoes.
