Mosquitoes In The North-East USA

Were you aware that Eastern Equine Encephalitis can be spread to humans? It is rare, but mosquitoes can give humans EEE and at least one resident of Middleborough can confirm it. What is more EEE is worse for humans than West Nile Virus, which is spread by the same species of mosquito in the North East of the United States.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis attacks the brain and the nervous system and frequently either kills of leaves its victim in significant trouble.

The one man who is known to have been contaminated with EEE in NE America in August 2010, is still in an invalid chair a year afterward and there is no anticipated end to his pain.

The health authorities in close by Plymouth and Bristol counties where there were also plenty of these mosquitoes (Culex pipiens) last year have warned that this could be a bad year for them as well.

They warned householders to begin on home defence by repairing fractured and damaged fly screens now. They have also recommended clearing up mosquitoes’ breeding grounds.

EEE has not been seen this year in the North East so far, but West Nile Virus has been encountered twice already. The weather has been ideal for mosquitoes – rain followed by warm weather.

The indications of West Nile and Easter Equine are comparable to those of flu. The difference is that around 1% of those with WNF might die, but far more with EEE will almost certainly die. Around a third will suffer permanent brain damage

People are worried by last year’s incident. For example, the authorities in Plymouth County have already received almost 10,000 requests to spray against mosquitoes. This situation can only get worse unless residents help by checking their gardens and nearby garbage ground for likely breeding sites and destroying them. The Fight Against Mosquitoes Around The Globe

Winnipeg has long been Canada’s mosquito capital, but Edmonton is challenging it this year. These days, mosquito traps in Edmonton are catching five times more mosquitoes that those in Winnipeg. Rainy spells followed by warm weather are responsible for the colossal rise in the number of these maddening insects.

Inhabitants of Edmonton are asking for a substantial increase in the budget to combat the mosquito populace which can carry West Nile Virus. West Nile Virus delivers symptoms similar to a severe bout of flu, although older and younger victims have passed away from epidemics. County health officials are considering spraying public areas before official public festivals to reduce the incidence of biting.

On the other side of the world, in Sidney, Australia, the parks department has also begun its anti-mosquito spraying plan and residents are invited to call in to become added to a ‘no spray’ list, if they are afraid of the toxicity of the insect spray. It is considered that most people will prefer having their block and backyard sprayed as the numbers of mosquitoes are rising there too.

However, the spraying program has always proved a success in the past and will like continue to be so. This year it will be supplemented by poisoning ponds and lakes with larvacide, which is a more helpful form of control adding fish to the ponds that consume mosquito larvae would be an even better manner. The tablets are known as Altosid and last for 30 days, although they are also considering using XR which works for 150 days.

West Nile Virus is also a difficulty in Sidney, although there have not been any recorded cases yet. This means nothing though as most individuals who get WNF think that they have a summer cold. The city health authorities say that they are continuing to trap mosquitoes and carry out autopsies on dead birds to get an early notification of a likely WNV epidemic.

The city health department is warning all those over 50 years of age and those with a weakened immune system to take extra care by using a repellent including DEET, picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oil on bare skin and by wearing long trousers and long-sleeved shirts at dusk and at dawn.

They are also recommending doing basic maintenance and repairs about the home and garden. In particular, fly screens ought to be repaired and all stagnant water should be drained. They advise drilling holes in any old tyres and containers that can hold water, because mosquitoes just need a half inch of water to breed.

Using Pet Friendly Rentals

The majority of people really love their pets, to the point where they become part of the family. Some pet owners cannot bear to be parted from their pets for more than a day or so and for these people, going on vacation can be a problem, because they do not want to leave their friends behind. Obviously the solution is to take your cat or dog with you. Dogs are easier to take away than cats, because they are more well-trained

If you are only going for a few days, say on business, finding a hotel near to the location of your meeting should not be too much of a problem, unless you want to stay at one of the big names in the city centre. It is usually the smaller, family-run hotels or guest houses that consent to pets, although some require you to keep your dog in a kennel on the premises overnight. larger hotels tend not to be very pet-friendly.

If you propose taking your pet with you, it is better if you make this clear when you make your booking as more hotels do not permit pets than do allow them. Normally there is no extra charge for a pet, but you are liable for any extra cleaning costs, should your pet get caught short.

If you are going away on vacation or for a longer period of time, it is sometimes far easier to find a holiday rental that will allow you to take your cat or dog with you. Again, it is best to make it obvious at booking that you want to take your dog with you. Fortunately, there are about fifty percent of rentals or more that will allow this, although once again, you will be held liable for any damage or mess made by your dog.

A tip: if on getting there, you see that previous pets have caused some damage or stains, take photographs on your first day and have them dated. Modern cameras often have the facility to date stamp photos or you can use a newspaper. Otherwise, point out the damage to your host.

When you travel with your dog, it is best to put the animal in some sort of a cage particularly when driving. A loving dog can be a distraction in a car. If it wants attention just when you are trying to perform a tricky manouevre, it can result in an accident. Some dogs get very frightened in cars and want to sit on their owner’s lap, this is also not a good idea and could lead to a charge of dangerous driving. Furthermore, if your dog is not caged and you have an accident, it could be thrown through the windscreen. If you are travelling by air, then the airline will insist on a cage, but they normally have their own.

Once you arrive at your pet-friendly rental, give your dog some of his normal food to eat, lay out his blanket from home, and put out one of his favourite toys, just to help make him feel at home. After all, everything will be strange to him and he might be able to smell the previous furry tenant. If cleaning staff will be entering your rental during your holiday, make sure that you are there at least for the first few times they visit.

Garden Swimming Pool Safety

If you own a swimming pool, you have to be aware of the safety aspects concerning that pool. There is no counter-argument, that is one of the legal duties of an owner of a swimming pool . Make sure that there is always a competent swimmer on hand who knows basic First Aid, especially artificial respiration with specific reference to drowning. In fact, why not take the whole family down to the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade and all get your life-savers certificate? The least you should have is a proper life belt – ocean-going – on a rope that is long enough to reach anywhere in your pool and tie off the loose end.

It might be possible to get away with not having a security fence, if you use an above ground swimming pool, but you will have to check with the local authorities on that one. You will also have to take away the access ladders when it is not in use. Forgetting to do so could equate to criminal negligence if anyone were to drown in your pool.

Swimming pool safety is primarily about saving lives but it is also about the peace of mind of the owner of the swimming pool. If someone were to drown in your pool and you knew that you had not done everything within your power to avert it, you would probably carry that burden of guilt with you for the remainder of your life, particularly if it was a child and even more so if it was your child or the child of one of your guests.

Many of people like to listen to music in the bath, but be cautious of using anything that necessitates mains power whilst you are in the water. It is better to use a battery powered or rechargeable unit for replaying your music.

If you have a spare CD player, you could build it into an outdoor hot tub and run it off the mains for the pump, but just place it out of reach of the tub. Use a remote if you need to control it. Bathing in the garden is excellent, but we can not all do that.

You can reconstruct an outdoor ambiance by putting potted plants in the bathroom. Some plants do not like a lot of light, but do like a humid atmosphere. Some orchids come into this bracket, but there ought to be plenty of others too – just ask at your garden centre.

When many people, singles and families alike, think about booking a holiday, many of them would only think about going to the beach for a fortnight’s lounging on the beach under the sun and swimming in warm, azure waters.

However, many of the best, most famous beach locations are magnets for crowds of people. It appears that most people like the sand, the sea and the sun. Now some people go to these places precisely because they are full of activity. They like the crowds and the night clubs that attract them. Mainly singles go to these types of destinations and a holiday affair is not far from many peoples’ minds.

Couples and older people may prefer a little less noise, pollution and commotion. However, there are beaches which meet these demands too. Often they are private beaches. Some have hotels on them but some do not. Those that do not frequently have inland beach cottage rental properties instead. These are nearly always self-catering.

When most people think of a beach it is automatically connected with the sea. However, this need not inevitably be so. There are also inland beaches on lakes and rivers. These beaches are usually referred to as inland beaches. Accommodation can be a problem with even some of the best inland beaches.

Many of these inland beaches are just not well-known enough to make a hotel commercially viable, but some of them have cottage rentals as an alternative. Singles are not so well catered for, but if you want a quiet holiday alone. maybe to study, then this might fitting be for you too.

You can fly into some of these resorts by seaplane, but it is more likely that you will take your own car or a rental car, if you want to get out and do some exploring further afield. Personally, I would rather hire a dinghy.

Moroccan furniture is usually solid timber and stylish. Morocco is an ex-French colony, but it is very close to Spain as well. In fact, two small parts of Morocco, Melilla and Ceuta are still under Spanish control.

Pediatricians advise avoiding the use of mosquito repellent creams and lotions on children under the age of six months as these chemicals could result in allergic and toxic reactions when applied directly to the baby?s skin.

However, it is advised that if you have to use a cream or lotion it is best to consult your child specialist and then put the repellent to the child?s clothes making certain you avoid areas where the child could put it in its mouth.

The use of liquid vaporizers, coils, sprays, and foams are extremely unadvisable as they could cause breathing allergies and other issues in your baby. In case you must, take your baby in when the fumes are given off.

The use of baby mosquito nets and natural or herbal remedies are safer until the baby is older. Try lighting citronella candles to ward off mosquitoes in your infant’s room.

It is worth mentioning that essential oils like margosa, citronella, peppermint, and eucalyptus can help ward off mosquitoes, however it is inadvisable to apply these oils immediately on the skin as they are strong.

However putting a couple of drops on the bedding would be useful. Mopping the floors with a couple of drops of essential oils added to the water would help and prove safe also.

Prevention would be better rather than repelling mosquitoes particularly for children. Maintaining a clean home and avoiding stagnant water standing in coolers, flowerpots, open drains, small ponds, bird baths, pets’ utensils and other bodies of water and adding a couple of drops of paraffin oil in the water would prevent mosquitoes multiplying.

In addition, ensure your child does not perspire if you leave it unattended, for mosquitoes breed in moisture. It is best to dress your baby in light coloured clothes fully covering the body, which would also help prevent mosquito bites.

Furthermore, avoiding powerful fragrances in the form of lotions, soap, oils or floral scented perfumes or room fresheners would help avoid the attraction of mosquitoes. Also, storing food covered over always will help inhibit the breeding of mosquitoes.

Last but most important, fix wire mesh and screens on all doors and windows and keep them closed always especially during dawn and dusk and help your baby breathe fresh air but with freedom from mosquitoes.
