Alarm Clocks And Online Collaboration

Have you ever bought a piece of equipment that you thought would come in really useful only to leave it lying around for months because you could not figure out how to set it up? Or not set all the functions up, because it would have taken hours to read through the handbook, which looked as if it had been translated by a machine anyway?

Most people have undergone the situation at some time or another. I had an alarm clock once that had dozens of features like waking me up at different times on the weekend to during the week and arbitrarily choosing a radio channel every day to wake me up. It also had a feature with which I could train it to understand some voice commands, but I could not be bothered with all that.

I simply wanted it to wake me up whenever I set it. Video recorders are similar devices. How many times do you hear of people setting their video recorder to record a film only to get a documentary on another channel? It used to occur a lot, didn’t it?

The point that I am getting at here is that the designers of these machines have been told to put as many functions as possible into them up to a price in order to be all things to all people. However, in making their machines so convoluted, a great deal of people decide not to bother using them at all and will avoid that make in the future, which is the exact opposite of what the manufacturers wanted.

The next time you go out looking for some electrical gadget, you will say to yourself: “Oh, So-And-So, you need a diploma to use one by So-And-So. I’m not buying one of theirs”.

So how can this affect you? Well, if you have to organize anything that you expect others to take part in or be enthusiastic about, try not to make it excessively complex. I am not saying ‘dumb-down’, just don’t show off by putting all the bells and whistles on it simply to show that you can do that. People will not be grateful to you for it, they will take no notice of your undertaking.

This has a great deal of implications for on line projects where people can be thousands of miles apart but still be collaborating on a joint development from home. Open source programming is a fine example of this type of work. The team leaders should keep everything as simple as possible if they want the maximum co-operation.

One technique that you can use to test to see if your venture is being understood is to ask. It sounds obvious and it should be, but a lot of team leaders will not ask because they think that it makes them look weak and unknowledgeable. Again, in fact, the opposite is the case. A good team leader is not a tyrant; a good team leader is a good organizer and is considerate.

How Is The Effectiveness Of Your Domestic Appliances Influenced By A Hard Water Supply?

The majority of homes are fed with a domestic water supply which provides “hard water”. Hard water is simply a designation which is applied to water which has a relatively high level of dissolved minerals in it. The two most important minerals are calcium and magnesium. There is absolutely no health risk associated with hard water – but it can have an impact on both the efficiency and lifespan of domestic appliances.

As a consequence of hard water, mineral deposits can be laid down in water pipes and a range of household appliances. Household appliances which use hot or boiling water are especially at risk as heating the water frees the minerals it contains which then solidify as “scale”. Coffee makers, kettles, steam irons, dishwashers and washing machines are all prone to this effect – as are household central heating systems and boilers.

The amounts of minerals that are released depend upon a number of different variables. One of these is temperature – the higher the temperature of the water, the more minerals will be released and the more scale will form. Running central heating systems, washing machines and dishwashers at lower temperature settings will reduce the amount of scale deposited and ensure that these appliances operate efficiently and have a long lifetime. Some soaps and detergents contain anti-scaling ingredients and these can also help to minimise scaling.

Of course, some appliances such as kettles and irons need to be used at high temperature. Some kettles are available with filters these days, which can prevent some of the minerals getting into the sensitive heating elements. Many irons now come with special anti-scaling traps which collect the scale deposits and allow it to be cleaned by simply flushing it under running water. Other alternatives include cleaning or flushing through using special anti-scale chemicals.

There may be no health problems as a result of a hard water supply, but some people will dislike the flavour of hot drinks and food prepared using this. In this case, a water filter could be used. Various types exist, ranging from simple jug type filters to on tap, under sink and even whole house filters. They are all effective, cheaper than you might imagine and relatively quick to install.

Whilst it may seem like a bit of an inconvenience, it’s well worth taking a little effort to combat the effects of a hard water supply. Apart from improved efficiency of domestic appliances, using the right detergents, operating at a lower water temperature and occasional cleaning will save you money and extend the life of your household goods.

Why Choosing The Right Ironing Board Is Important

There’s not much doubt that an ironing board is a dull and mundane item of household equipment to which very few people give much consideration. Nevertheless, every home will have one. It is an essential household item and – if you pick the wrong type – you could well finish up with poorly ironed clothes, take longer to get through your ironing than you need to and even strain your back.

Most people use steam irons these days – or possibly even steam generator irons, which are becoming popular due to the fact that they can reduce the amount of time spent ironing by 50%. For either of these types of irons, an ironing board with an open mesh surface construction is a good choice. This allows the steam to pass through the garment being pressed, through the cover of the ironing board and through the mesh surface of the board itself. When a lot of items are being ironed in one session, this helps to avoid any build up of condensation which might otherwise cause both the garments and the cover of the board to become soggy.

Ironing will be easier if the cover of the board is smooth. It should be secure and with no tendency to slip or move whilst pressing your garments. A cover which is elasticated around the edges, possibly with a couple of cross ties under the bottom surface of the board, will be unlikely to move around on you when you’re ironing. Choosing a metalised cover will mean that some of the iron’s heat is reflected. This will help to smooth the underside of the garment whilst you are passing the iron over the top surface and may reduce ironing time.

The type of items that you intend to iron will play an important role in determining the size and shape of the board for you. A small board will be easier to store – but will typically require you to position the garment that you’re pressing more often. Picking a large board is usually the best choice – but make sure it has a good taper on the pointed end. This will make it easier to get into corners – the corners of blouses and shirts, collars etc.

Scissor action legs are pretty much the norm. It should be possible to adjust the height to a level that suits you and doesn’t cause any back strain. If you like to iron from a seated position then legs which have a curve on them – so that you don’t bang your knees on them – are a good idea. The legs should provide good support. A broad T-piece, or legs that splay to a good width and have a connecting bar, are usually good options.

The support for the iron itself should be sturdy enough to take the weight of the iron. Wire type extension platforms are usually okay for standard steam irons. The extra weight presented by a steam generator iron may mean that a longer board which just features a heat resistant plate on a slightly extended surface is better. Alternatively, the base unit of steam generator irons may be positioned on the floor – as long as the connecting hose between base unit and iron is long enough to permit this.

Slash your ironing time in half with a steam generator iron – you’ll wonder how you managed without one.

Could A Steam Generator Iron Save You Time?

Ironing is, quite frankly, a thankless and seemingly never ending task. You can lessen the boredom somewhat by watching TV or listening to music while you do it – but it’s still a tedious chore which very few people enjoy. Anything which could reduce the amount of time required for ironing would be very welcome in most households.

You could always send your clothes to the dry cleaners of course – or consider employing a maid. There are even companies which offer a service whereby they pick up your washed clothes and return them pressed and ironed. However, these are somewhat pricey options.

A more viable alternative (for most people at least) would be to take advantage of advances in iron design and use a steam generator iron. Whilst these may look very similar to conventional irons, they have a completely different construction – and this provides a number of positive benefits.

Steam generator irons, unlike traditional steam irons, contain no water in the iron itself. They have a large base unit which doubles as both heater and water reservoir and they produce a lot more steam – at a higher pressure – than a standard iron.

The steam is fed to the iron using a hollow connecting hose and, because it is at high pressure, it penetrates deep into the fabric of the garment being pressed. This makes it easier – and faster – to iron. The fact that there is no water in the iron also means that it is lighter and easier to use. The net result is an improvement in the quality of the finished garment and a reduction in the amount of time spent ironing. Most users report a reduction in ironing time of around about 50%.

When deciding upon which steam generator iron to choose, be certain to pick one with a high steam pressure. Between 4.5 and 5.0 bar is ideal. Sometimes you will see the iron capacity stated in “grams of steam per minute” (gpm), in which case you would be well advised to pick one with a value between 70 and 120 gpm.

You should also ensure that the size of the water reservoir is sufficient – so that you don’t need to keep stopping ironing to top up the water. A removable water tank will make filling easier – and some irons have the facility to top up the reservoir whilst using the iron – which will avoid having to wait whilst the iron heats up again.

Other factors to consider include the length of the connecting hose between the base unit and the iron, the material of the soleplate, the ease of use and the inclusion of some form of anti-scale system.

Steam generator irons do cost a little more than standard irons. However, considering that they can cut the time you spend ironing in half – whilst simultaneously giving a better quality end result – they really do represent great value for money.

How To Find The Right Steam Generator Iron For You

On the face of it, steam generator irons and traditional steam irons appear to be pretty similar. However, steam generator irons have a different construction and a different mode of operation. They use a larger base unit as both water tank and boiler – unlike a traditional steam iron there is no water in the body of the iron itself. Steam generated in the base unit is supplied to the body of the iron via a hollow tube.

Steam generator irons generally cost a little more than standard steam irons – but they have a number of advantages which more than justify this. It’s probably worthwhile taking a moment or two to review the key points to consider when choosing a steam generator iron. The main areas that you should look at when deciding which iron is best for you are water reservoir capacity, steam pressure, soleplate material and design, ease of cleaning, and overall ease of use.

STEAM PRESSURE: The steam causes heat and moisture to penetrate the fabric of the garment being ironed. This makes it more flexible and facilitates the removal of creases and wrinkles. The greater the pressure of the steam, the deeper it penetrates the garment being pressed and the better the finished result will be.

Steam generator irons usually have their output quoted in grams of steam per minute. The higher the number, the more steam is produced and the easier it is to iron. Typical values range from 70 to 140 grams per minute (g/min).

You will also see some irons with their steam pressure quoted in bar. Again, the higher this number is, the more steam that will be produced and the better the finished results will be.

WATER RESERVOIR SIZE: Steam generator irons normally have a generously sized water tank. This means that you will be able to do a fair bit of ironing before you need to top up the water. The exact duration will vary based upon the type of fabric being ironed – but you should get a couple of hours of ironing out of a 1.4 litre tank.

If you do a good deal of ironing then you may wish to consider getting one of the larger tanks available. If you have an ironing board which is relatively small, then you might want to make sure that the tube which connects the reservoir to the iron is long enough for you to work with the base unit positioned on the floor rather than on the ironing board itself.

Consider also how easy filling the reservoir is. A lot of the better steam generator irons come with water reservoirs which are detachable, and this makes topping up a lot easier. It’s certainly better than fussing about with jugs of water. Other irons have the option of topping up the reservoir whilst the iron is being used – avoiding the need to disconnect it and then having to wait for it to heat up again after being refilled.

THE SOLEPLATE: The iron’s soleplate should be of a design and material which allows it to pass smoothly and easily over the fabric being pressed. It should be scratch resistant, durable, and easy to clean.

EASE OF CLEANING: The majority of modern irons, whether steam generator irons or conventional steam irons, use ordinary tap water. Depending upon where you live, this will typically contain a variety of different minerals – including both calcium and magnesium. This can result in scale deposits as the water is heated and evaporates.

If you live in an area with a hard water supply, then you should definitely look for an iron which has some form of anti-scale system. Some irons loosen the scale using water and then flush it out. Others have removable anti-scale cartridges for easy cleaning.

USER FRIENDLINESS: As discussed, you might prefer a long connecting hose to let you position your iron on the floor as opposed to the end of the ironing board.

A removable water reservoir is also something that most people will find convenient.

Other features, which you may or may not find appealing, include automatically rewinding power cords, fast heat up systems, easy clean soleplates etc.

SUMMARY: Be certain to pick an iron with a high enough steam pressure for your needs. Choose a water tank that is big enough for you to complete your ironing without having to stop to top it up. Make sure that the soleplate is well designed and uses a suitable material in its construction. Make sure that some form of anti-scale system is included.
